Australian journalist apologizes for failed Adele interview
Matt Doran, co-host of “Weekend Sunrise” on the country’s Channel 7, arrived in London with a camera crew for an exclusive interview with the British singer-songwriter.
The interview took place earlier this month but it won’t air now, as Adele’s record label, Sony Music, reportedly denied permission to show the footage after Doran told the singer that I haven’t heard her new album yet.
Sony Music did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
However, the interview did not go as planned when it was discovered that Doran had not heard the singer’s new album, “30” – her first album in six years – before their meeting.
In a statement sent to CNN, Doran said he missed an email sent from Sony with a pre-recorded copy of the album, which was released on Friday.
He said: “When I sat down to interview Adele, I didn’t really know that I had received a preview email of her unreleased album. Then I discovered it had been sent to me as linked the ‘e-card’ after we landed in London the day before the interview In my lengthy telephone discussion with previous Sony representatives, I was never informed that Preview is being provided.
“It was a huge oversight for me but NOT an intentional derision. This is the most important email I have ever overlooked and I deeply regret and emphatically apologize.”
Doran denied reports from the press that Adele had “walked out” of the interview and said they were still talking at length, although he acknowledged that the interview would not be broadcast.
He said: “I admire Adele’s music and her majestic voice, and it’s gnawing at me so savagely that I’ve offended her. Of course I would listen to the album if I knew of a copy. deliberately not bothering would be unforgivable arrogance.
“But to suggest that the interview was disrespectful – or Adele walked away – is incorrect. In fact, it went well overtime and we have a great relationship. Adele is funny, attractive, generous, honest and insightful and I am devastated that her fans are being denied this interview.
“As for the record,” he added, “I never said, ‘I haven’t heard your album.’ I said, ‘I just had the privilege of listening to Go Easy On Me, and it’s like you'” created something extraordinary’.”
