Via Craig Daly: Canelo Alvarez abruptly closed his post-match press conference last Saturday night following his win over Gennadiy Golovkin when asked if he would face David Benavidez in the future.
With the answer that Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KO) gave to the media, he made it clear that he does not like against undefeated WBC interim super-middleweight champion David Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs).
Fans are starting to see Canelo as a cherry picker as he is said to avoid risky opponents like Benavidez, Demetrius Andrade and Jermall Charlo.
While it was good that Canelo took on Dmitry Bivol last May, you have to remember that the fight was supposed to be an easy win for the Mexican star when it came to the match.
Bivol has been underwhelming in his recent narrowly decisive win over Craig Richards. As a result, he was selected by Canelo to fight for his 175-lb WBA title.
It’s a fight fans want to see, and the 25-year-old Benavidez is still in his prime and not as old as 40-year-old Golovkin.
Many boxing fans feel that Canelo’s dull trio fighting an aging and shooting-looking Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) is virtually impossible to find and not worthy of the level. for $85 or $65.
“I don’t know. Anything can happen. Always when I say this, you show the video and put whatever you want,” Canelo Alvarez said when asked if we could watch a fight between him and David Benavidez in the future or not.
“When I say I don’t want to fight the Mexicans it’s because I represent Mexico, and that’s why. But I do not care. I fight anyone, and I fight all my life, with anyone.
Why do you think I don’t play a Mexican, Benavidez? Look, I heard his dad say a lot of things. Look at what he’s accomplished, nothing. A single champion, Anthony Dirrell. Please, don’t disrespect yourself. Please, guys,” Canelo said.
“No more questions because I’m a bit crazy and I’m tired,” Canelo said. “They can do whatever they want. I don’t care who they fight. I don’t care,” Canelo said when asked if Benavidez and fighters like Bivol should fight each other.
It’s not clear why this simple question about Benavidez angered Canelo so much.
It seems a bit odd since you assume that if Canelo were asked about fighting the likes of Caleb Plant, Avni Yildirim or Billy Joe Saunders, you wouldn’t get the same angry response.
“I feel like if he’s not fighting the Mexicans anymore, what’s going on?“David Benavidez said to Fighthypetalking about Canelo not wanting to fight the Mexicans anymore.
“I have a WBC interim belt. There are rankings for a reason. Canelo will find it, and the WBC will find it. I have won my place many times.
“I won two championships and I won an interim championship belt. It’s not my fault that these people don’t want to fight me. If it wasn’t for Canelo giving me a chance, it would be frustrating.
“Time is on my side because I am 26. Charlo is in his 30s. Caleb Plant is in his 30s, and Canelo is in his 30s. The only one still young was Morrell. I want a big fight.
“I feel the walls are closing in on all these fighters. He [Canelo] probably said so because if Zurdo Ramirez defeats Bivol, ‘I won’t fight the Mexicans anymore.’
“Why not get the biggest paycheck possible? Everyone said we were looking for a salary. The person who is receiving the real salary is Canelo. I don’t want to be the complaining type. ‘Oh, he wants a bill.’ I don’t want a flyer. I want to find my way to Canelo.
“How am I going to do it if no one wants to go against me? It’s a tough situation, but like I said, the walls are closing for all of these warriors. In the end we will have to fight,” Benavidez said.
