Weddings in India are a grand event with many functions and ceremonies. Food is an integral part of such weddings and more often than not, families go overboard to ensure that their guests don’t go hungry. Therefore, a lot of food is wasted in this process. In one such scenario, what stands out is the scene of a well-dressed woman sitting on a railway platform in Bengal, delivering leftover wedding food to the poor. We don’t know if it’s some profound principle of waste reduction or the goal of feeding the homeless, but this woman’s effort is inspirational.
Nilanjan Mondal, a professional wedding photographer, shared this moment on a professional wedding photographer’s Facebook page. Mondal identified this woman as Papiya Kar, who was seen feeding the poor with leftovers from her brother’s wedding. The incident happened around 1 a.m. on December 5 at Ranaghat Junction, a railway station outside Kolkata. We can see the woman wearing traditional wedding dress and serving food on paper plates herself in the photos. People of all ages had gathered at the platform where she was distributing food. There is Dal, Roti, Sabzi and rice among the dishes served.

More than 1,200 people liked the Facebook post, and many even commented on it. Some say it is not an isolated case and Kar has also cooked meals and served them to the needy in the past. One of the commenters in Bengali appreciated the woman’s act of kindness and added that if everyone had the same mindset, society would be a better place. There are other comments like “great job”, “great job” and “so proud of you”.
A few days ago, in another similar act of charity, 10-year-old Lyla, who used to sell cookies to raise money for foot treatment, received help from an Instagram user in an unexpected way. .
