BJP makes up a large portion of Tripura Civic Polls Pie, count on: 10 facts

Votes are being counted for elections to several civic bodies including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, or AMC, in Tripura today. The elections were held amid a bitter political battle between the state’s ruling BJP and the Trinamool Congress.

Sources say the BJP is leading or has won in all seats for which the tally has been completed. This is the first citizenship election that the BJP has contested after coming to power in Tripura in 2018.

A total of 334 seats available in urban local bodies, including AMC with 51 wards, 13 city councils and six nagar panchayats.

The BJP, under Secretary Biplab Deb, fielded candidates in all seats and won 112 out of 334 seats that were not checked at the AMC and 19 urban local bodies.

Of the remaining 222 seats, about 785 candidates are running after 36 withdrew their nominations. The election was mainly between the BJP, the Trinamool Congress of West Bengal Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), aka CPI (M).

The Trinamool Congress demanded that the elections be declared invalid, alleging that they were “seriously rigged and turned into a farce” by the ruling BJP. The CPI (M) was similarly required in the five wards of AMC.

BJP spokesman Nabendu Bhattacharya said the party had asked its workers to maintain discipline. Mr Bhattacharya said in a statement: “The party karyakartas have been asked to follow the organizational tradition after the announcement of the results.

There are heavy security implementations across the state. Thousands of personnel from the Tripura State Rifles and central paramilitary forces have been deployed in sensitive areas where vote counting centers are located.

There have been reports of a spate of violence in Tripura as the Trinamool Parliament tries to gain a foothold in the state ahead of the 2023 congressional elections.

Trinamool Parliament Leader Sayoni Ghosh, who was campaigning in Tripura, was arrested and charged with attempted murder on November 22. She was released on bail a day later.

On voting day earlier this week, opposition parties accused BJP workers of riding motorbikes around and threatening their candidates. The CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress also allege that not all voters are allowed into the polling place.
