Black Louisiana Trooper accuses boss of revenge for speaking out about car driver’s death | News
Carl Cavalier said the Louisiana State Police Department was awaiting the termination of his contract as retaliation for his criticism of the way his department handled a deadly traffic stop in 2019.
Based on NBC NewsCavalier, 33, said Friday (October 15) that he will fight for his state trooper post. Cavalier has worked for the state police department since 2014. He was quoted by a local television channel as saying his department covered up the death of 49-year-old Ronald Greene.
He has been on paid leave since August. He shared a letter from October 8 warning him of the possibility of being fired within 45 days. It was signed and dated by Louisiana State Police Superintendent Lamar A. Davis.
Furthermore, the letter outlines violations of public statements, departmental loyalty, seeking publicity, misconduct by an officer, and the spread of information.
“I swore and swore to do exactly what I was doing,” Cavalier said. “I will pursue my work with everything in me. If the justice system works as it should, if the appeals process works as it should, I believe I will go back to my job. ”
Talk freely WWBRZ in June that “in my eyes, we still have killers at work. The guys who got a slap on the wrist for their role in the Ronald Greene case will go unpunished… patrol the streets and leave their jobs behind. ”
Greene, 49, was involved in a high-speed chase on May 10, 2019. The chase resulted in arrest by state soldiers. A year later, footage was released to the Associated Press, showing soldiers stunning, punching and pulling Greene; he was left without medical attention for almost nine minutes. The soldiers initially told Greene’s family that he died of a collision after crashing into a tree.
NAACP Baton Rouge Regional President Eugene Collins said: “He has tried to provide transparency that he feels the agency does not offer. This guy stood up for the soldiers and what was right. This makes us take a step back.”
“This is not an oath I swore to keep, watching my colleagues defeat Black men,” Cavalier said.
