BYD spinoff reveals electric sports car, rugged SUV concept

Phuong Thanh Bao – one of the Chinese car giants BYD's multiple sub-brands – has revealed a pair of unique electric concept cars, both expected to enter production in the coming years.

Chinese auto news reports Fang Cheng Bao unveiled an electric sports car concept and a rugged SUV show car at the annual Spring Conference, with plans to eventually make both models available to the public.

The electric sports car is called the Super 9 concept, although the publication suggests it will be renamed Bao 9 when it goes into production.

Designed by Wolfgang Egger – who previously worked as chief designer for SEAT, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Audi and Lamborghini – the Super 9 is a sleek roadster without a roof but with a pair of scissor doors.

Its cabin is not too different from classic mid-20th century racing cars, with the driver and passenger compartments divided in half – while two small bubbles above the dashboard act as the windshield.

Although it is said to be an all-electric vehicle, Fang Cheng Bao has not yet revealed any details about the powertrain.

Also revealed was the Super 3 SUV, which debuted after its initial launch teased last year.

Its shape is rugged, with pronounced wheel arches, large wheels and boxy lines, setting it apart from the smaller version. BYD Atto 3 sold in Australia.
