Canelo Alvarez: “Losing is not an option” against Gennady Golovkin
Via Adam Baskin: Canelo Alvarez says he cannot lose the match against Gennadiy Golovkin next Saturday. The Mexican star had to practice too much for a three-way match with 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) and then lost.
Golovkin is the underdog to the bookmakers and based on how he looks in the last number of games since 2019, Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) has nothing to worry about on the day. September 17.
The biggest issue for Canelo is whether his chronically poor cardio will recover for this bout, as we saw last May when he ran out of gas after two innings with Dmitry Bivol.
Interestingly, Canelo believes he won the first five to six rounds of that fight with Bivol and he thinks he will beat him “easily” in the rematch. It’s not the fight that fans have seen.
“Losing is not an option for me, but you take the risk. You have the best battles, the hardest battles out there. You may lose one day,” Canelo Alvarez told Matchroom Boxing about his fight next Saturday against Gennadiy Golovkin.
“I’m happy to do fights like this because they make me feel comfortable. I think my legacy is growing with fights like this, but I’ve learned a lot and I don’t feel ashamed about it because I’ve challenged myself to be great.” Canelo said. “I will continue to do that.
“With Bivol, I am at my peak. Unfortunately, I have a lot of stuff in my training camp. I lost, but I will have my chance in the near future. That’s the difference. The difference is that I was at my peak when I lost to Bivol.
“It’s not in my weight class, but I think I can beat him easily, but things still happen. I take it as experience,” Canelo said of the fight against Bivol. “I won the first five or six rounds, but then I got tired. That’s what happened. He’s no better than me.
“I always say to my young son, ‘It won’t be the end of the world if you lose. You are in a sport, and you can win, or you can lose. It’s not important. It is not the end of the world.’ You need to keep going and keep fighting, and you will be the best one day,” Canelo said.
