Via Dan Ambrose: Canelo Alvarez has finally responded to recent criticism of him from Floyd Mayweather Jr by retweeting a post from one of his social media followers.
Canelo’s fans say the undefeated boxer Mayweather is “envious” and “bitter” of what the 31-year-old Alvarez has achieved during his 16-year professional career.
Mayweather recently told the media that he was NOT impressed with Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) deciding to jump to cruiserweight to challenge WBC champion Ilunga Makabu. He said that the Mexican star is “DUCK” former two-time WBC 168-lb champion David Benavidez.
Mayweather barely needs to tell the boxing world that Canelo is and has beaten undefeated talent Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) because it’s purely academic at this point.
Canelo avoided Benavidez like the plague all but five scales. If in doubt, Alvarez’s decision to move up to the cruiser rank to challenge WBC belt holder Ilunga Makabu next May has reinforced the facts. Alvarez DON’T want to face Benavidez the lion cub, and it’s indisputable now that he NEVER does.
Fear is a terrible emotion that puts some fighters on the easy path. In this case, Canelo chose to avoid Benavidez and face the weakest link among the cruiser champions, 34-year-old Makabu, a fighter that Tony Bellew defeated in 2016.

Loyal Canelo fans haven’t pointed out that Mayweather is taking more risks with his career, and at the age of 31, he has already beaten these talented boxers:
- Oscar De La Hoya
- Diego Corrales
- Jose Luis Castillo
- Zab Judah
- Jesus Chávez
- Genaro Hernandez
- Carlos Hernandez
What prevents Canelo from being seen in the same light as Mayweather are his controversial victories over Gennady Golovkin, Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout and Miguel Cotto.
Also, there was a controversial draw that Canelo was offered in his first match against Golovkin in 2017, in which he appeared to have lost eight innings with four.
A positive test result for the PED-banned clenbuterol damages Canelo’s legacy, making comparisons of him to Mayweather completely unlikely.
“He is [Canelo] cruiser class and…he is [Canelo] do nothing. Do I like this fight? [Canelo vs. Makabu]. He’s DUCKING David Benavidez.
“Do I like this? [Ilunga Makabu] the fight? Absolutely not! We want to see Benavidez,” Mayweather said.
Caleb Plant on losing to Canelo
Caleb Plant said to Against TV Hub in his 11th knockout loss to Canelo on November 6. “It could have been 6-4 or 5-5, and I had to lick my wound and come back.
“But I’m in good spirits, I feel good, and I’m in a great mood, and my body is great,” Plant continued. “Early next year or something like that. I just started, 22 matches.
“If that’s what he wants to do,” Plant said of Canelo’s promotion to cruiser to challenge WBC champion Ilunga Makabu next May. “He didn’t punch like that at first, and that’s why I started walking towards him a little bit,” Plant said when asked to rate Canelo’s strength.
“But I was just arrested on my way back. I put my hand up, but he caught me inside, and I caught with a good shot. Anyone can be caught with a good shot in boxing,” says Plant.
As you can tell, Plant is struggling with a recent knock-out loss to Canelo.
Failure has left Plant shaking and he has trouble putting things into perspective.
Instead of pinpointing what exactly happened and making sure it doesn’t happen again, Plant gets frustrated with himself and seems completely bleak about it.
That is not a good sign. Plants don’t react like the greats Sugar Ray Robinson did after losing. Robinson is not discouraged after losing because he will learn from his defeats and keep fighting.
Plant talks about the similarities of Mayweather
“I watched some tapes [of Canelo’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013],” Plant said. “But try to make certain adjustments in the fight. At first, I tried to move my legs, but what happened, happened. It continues with the sequel.
“I don’t think we really have too much in common,” Plant said in response to being compared to Mayweather. “He has a lot of IQs, and I know I have a lot of IQs. I have a lot of footwork and good defense.
“We have a similar number [attributes]. We don’t compare ourselves, but I don’t think I fight as much as him [Mayweather]. I have a different style, but I can do different things.
“So I try to do different things here when necessary, but I am my own person. I didn’t invent that style. He [Mayweather] didn’t invent his style. In the past, we were all taking pieces from everyone,” says Plant.
What Plant lacks is the stamina that Mayweather possesses throughout his career. For all the similarities Plant has with Mayweather, he doesn’t have the gas tank needed to follow in his footsteps.
Plant’s defeat to Canelo isn’t the end of the world, as he’s still young at 28, but he’ll have to fix his heart problem and try to improve his weak punching power if he does. wants to compete with the talented boxer at 168. At this point, Plant must be ranked lower than these guys with 168:

If Demetrius Andrade moves to 168, Plant will be below him. Andrade has too much strength and stamina for Plant or Canelo.

“Just get comfortable and try to keep that relaxed energy going,” Caleb Plant said of why he chatted with Canelo in the ninth inning.
“I let him know, ‘Hey, I’m pretty good, and I know I’m better than you think,’ and I know I surprised him with that. I’m just having some fun.
“And I just let him know how sad I am that I was,” Plant said of his conversation with Canelo shortly after the fight when the game was halted by the referee in the 11th round.
“And I’m just being honest in this moment and not trying to make excuses to say, ‘You know, ‘the referee stopped too soon’ or something like that. I was sad, I had done a lot of work, and I told him that I wanted to keep fighting.
“I wouldn’t recommend stopping it, but that’s all. I’ll be right back next year for the first quarter and I’ve already shown that I’m at the top.
“I have shown that I am a world-class fighter, and I have shown that I can fight anyone in the world. If he’s a generational talent, then I’ve shown I belong. So I will be back. I’m motivated and I’ll be back,” Plant said.
Caleb was dropped in the scoreboard by the following points as Canelo stopped at 11:96-94, 97-93 and 98-92.
Of those scores, 96-94 was the most accurate of the three, as Plant was still on the right track and could have won a draw had he finished strong at 11 and 12.
