Via Chris Williams: Chris Colbert (16-1, 6 KOs) want a rematch against 2016 Olympic athlete Hector Garcia (15-0, 10 KOs) after suffering an embarrassing one-sided unanimous defeat in the 12th round to him last Saturday night in the WBA superclass title elimination during the match at The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
Unfortunately for Colbert, 30-year-old Garcia has other plans, preferring to challenge the 130-lb WBA champion Roger Gutierrez next as his new obligatory challenger.
No adjustments have been made
The worrying thing about Colbert’s performance against Garcia was the lack of adjustments he failed to make during the game. Colbert stood in front of him and scuffled despite it being made 100% clear from the first round that Garcia was too strong for him.
The only adjustments Colbert made during the match was getting on his bike after crashing on the seventh inning and giving up.
After this loss, Colbert will need to go back to the drawing board and rebuild. The flaws Hector exposes in Colbert’s game such as lack of strength, poor defense, and patient IQ will likely continue to limit his future success if he doesn’t correct them.
Reducing the weight to 126 for the featherweight movement could solve Colbert’s problem of him being too weak for the 130-lb.
If Colbert were to move from weight to featherweight, he wouldn’t need to worry about getting knocked down as often as he used to if he kept at 130.
#1 WBA Colbert seemed unprepared for style for the bigger and stronger Garcia, as he tried to stupidly fight him from the opening round.
Given Colbert’s inability to punch and kick, it would never work for him to take down a slipper like Garcia, however he kept trying for the first six innings.
In the seventh inning, Colbert dribbled the ball with his left hand from Hector and was hit hard in the back. What’s alarming about the knockdown is the way Colbert knocks down both hands when he steps directly on top of Garcia.
Perhaps facing a boxer as unskilled as those with whom Colbert had previously had a 16-0 undefeated record, he might not have paid the price to approach them with his hands, but not a well-educated 2016 Olympic athlete. Garcia. You have to be better than that when fighting a boxer with his experience.
After the knockdown, Colbert showed no interest in clashing with Garcia, choosing to stay on his bike and survive the rest of the battle. That was worrisome because there were still five rounds to go, and Colbert could have quickly regrouped with the right game plan.
The scores are 118-109, 118-109 and 119-108.
Colbert probably won’t go up against WBA lightweight champion Roger Gutierrez, who withdrew from the bout after testing positive for COVID-19.
