Via Barry Holbrook: Anthony Joshua’s trainer Robert Garcia says he would prefer AJ do two or three fights before facing Tyson Fury.
Garcia felt that December 3 was too soon for Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) to return after losing to Oleksandr Usyk on August 20. Joshua ran out of gas in the championship rounds of that fight and was disqualified.
Robert says they will do their best to train for the fight with WBC heavyweight champion Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) if it happens on December 3.
He thinks Joshua can win with his hand speed and strength, but he wants to make sure he works harder in camp so he gets air in the championship rounds.
“Hell [Joshua] Go out and practice, and we’ll do our best to go out there and win. The fight won’t be easy, but can it be won? Yes, we can win that war,” Robert Garcia told iD Boxing. “Do I want it to happen two or three wars from now? Rightbut it’s a big fight, and it’s a big business.
Joshua made the decision himself to fight Fury’s next fight, as he felt that this might be his only chance to face him.
Garcia said: “His management team is very smart when it comes to negotiating and making the final decision. “I want him to hit two or three games against anything big.
“Anthony rematched Usyk right away when he could have easily done two or three games before,” Garcia said.
“Anthony has great speed and great power. Can he catch him? Of course. I would say train a little harder because you need three more rounds that you lost at the end of the fight with Usyk,” Garcia said when asked what Joshua must do to beat Fury.
“He has great power and speed. Do I think we need to push him a little more? I agree. I think if it [Fury-Joshua] it won’t be December 3 because there’s not enough time.
“I think to promote the war; it may push it too soon. If so, we’ll be ready. Anthony is one of those guys who always stay in shape. Garcia says an eight-week training camp is more than enough.
