Konzum, a major supermarket chain in Croatia, has enabled cryptocurrency payments for thousands of its customers in the country. The retail brand has added nine cryptocurrencies as payment options. These cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Tether, and USD Coin among others. Currently, the Croatian government is on the fence about the crypto space. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are not illegal in Croatia, but neither are they recognized by the authorities. Decisions on the regulation of cryptocurrencies in the country are still unclear.
Supporting the decision, a spokesperson for Konzum told the media that the crypto space is growing exponentially and will ultimately determine the future.
“The production of electronic money payments is another indicator that Konzum is continuously monitoring global trends, delivering innovations and setting standards in the retail sector. We are proud to be leaders in another rapidly evolving and future-oriented field”, Bitcoin.com portal quote Board member Konzum Uroš Kalinić said.
A Croatian payment processor called Paycek will allow people to choose a desired cryptocurrency and complete the payment by scanning the generated QR code. To address the volatility of the cryptocurrency market, Paycek will guarantee users a temporary fixed exchange rate.
For the initial stages, the cryptocurrency payment option will be limited to online purchases from Konzum but the feature will later be extended to retail purchases as well.
This is not the first Croatian brand to integrate electronic money payment with its services.
In early September, Croatian e-bike company Greyp Bikes began allowing the purchase of advanced bicycle products using the same nine cryptocurrencies already authorized by Konzum.
In addition, this year 40 Tifon gas stations have started accepting cryptocurrencies with payments supported by Paycek.
Despite the lack of regulatory frameworks, crypto payments are accelerating among a number of brands.
