Cupra Born, Formentor and Leon facelifts teased

Cupra made the most of its event in Terramar last week, revealing updated versions of the Born, Formentor and Leon likely two years from launch respectively.

The Unstoppable Impulse event in Terramar sees Cupra reveal electrified Terramar crossoverproduction version of the Tavascan electric crossover and its second, more production-ready version UrbanRebel concept.

Cupra also raised three doors on the stage to reveal the first part of the update Born, Formentor and Leonwith images taken from the audience then appearing on sites like Autovisie, Cochespias and Autonotizen.

The Spanish brand says the event is designed to showcase “the next generation of heroes that will debut in 2025”.

Leon and Formentor are currently only being introduced in 2020 in Europe, with a Born version coming later in late 2021. So it’s a bit early for a mid-life update.

The updated Born, Formentor and Leon feature unusual new lighting features commonly found on the Tavascan and Terramar, including three triangular daytime running lights inside the headlight clusters.

Like the current Born version, all three upgraded models have a slim top and a large bottom.

The latter appears closed on all three models, suggesting the use of active shutters.

Born and Formentor have a trapezoidal opening. At the back, it is flanked by a pair of triangular holes on each side and divided by a bar on which the license plate is attached.

The Leon also has a license plate bar, although its openings are of a different shape and are visually connected to the vertical air intake/fog light assembly.

Not present is Ateca, the oldest member of the Cupra squad. It was launched in 2018 and is based on the Seat Ateca launched in 2016.

As a 4.4m-long SUV with an upright stance, in contrast to the similarly sized but sleeker Formentor, the Ateca can be replaced by a 4.5m-long Terramar.

By 2025, Cupra’s electric vehicle lineup will include a low-end EV based on the UrbanRebel concept, plus Born and Tavascan riding on it.

Gasoline and plug-in hybrid models will include the Leon hatch and wagon, Formentor and Terramar crossover.

Cupra is targeting global sales of 500,000 vehicles per year in the medium term, amazing growth for a brand that, since its launch in 2018, has sold around 200,000 vehicles.

It entered new markets outside of Europe, with Australia being one of the first. The brand debuts here mid-year with the Leon hatch and Ateca and Formentor crossover, with the Born EV early next year.
