Date, Theme, History and Importance of World Radio Day
Every year, World Radio Day is celebrated on 13 February to emphasize the importance of radio. In an age of advanced technology, easy access to the internet and other means of communication, the special role of radio simply cannot be ignored. There are many people who still not only trust radio but also rely on it for news consumption and entertainment purposes. Until now, radio has become a prominent platform for reaching the masses, at least in India.
History
Member States of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) first announced this date in 2011. However, it was later adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day. Since then, February 13 has been designated as World Radio Day.
Topic
The theme of World Radio Day 2022 is “Radio and Belief”. On the occasion of World Radio Day 2022, UNESCO invites radio stations around the world to celebrate the event’s 11th anniversary, as well as more than a century of broadcasting. The three main sub-themes of World Radio Day 2022 We:
1) Trust in the media: Journalism should be factual, well researched and verified. Those involved in radio journalism must be able to produce high-quality content.
2) Reliability and accessibility: This sub-topic is intended to inform the need for access to information or news for different sections of society. Each and every individual (including people with disabilities) must have access to radio.
3) Reliability and viability of radio stations: Broadcasters must ensure competition and attract a large audience.
Meaningful
Even after decades, radio remains one of the oldest, most popular and most widely consumed news media. It also plays an important role in providing information in times of disaster. The main motivation behind starting this day is to allow people from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences to voice their concerns and voice their opinions.
