Errol Spence Jr.: Ryan Garcia's worst nightmare
Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence is too solid, big, strong and skilled for Ryan Garcia to handle at 147 and above. Garcia needs to pick his battles because this is not the fight he needs.
Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) announced he wants to defeat Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) because of legal issues with trainer Derrick James. I guess Ryan felt that he was showing his loyalty to Derrick by calling out Spence, who was coming off a loss to Terence Crawford last year.
In the video caption, Ryan is seen downing a glass of wine and stuffing himself with food while constantly receiving side glances from people off-camera. Was Ryan wise when he said he would kick Spence in the back?
Spence's size and strength
If Ryan is serious about fighting Spence, the Texas native would likely accept, as long as he's willing to move up to 150 or higher.
Spence could not have made it to 147 again without being exhausted to the point of weakness and weakness, which some boxing fans believe was the cause of his loss to Crawford. Errol started training camp too heavy and it killed him at 147.
Ryan may have difficulty fighting an experienced fighter like Spence. The money would be nice, but it's not a fight he should be taking unless Spence is as exhausted as he was against Crawford. If he goes all out, it won't be pretty.
Ryan's misguided loyalty
It's great that Ryan wants to show his loyalty to his coach, Derrick James, but there are other ways to show it than jumping on a sword for him. The last thing Ryan needed was to be hospitalized after being hit by the still dangerous Spence.
With all the money Ryan has, he could buy a mansion for Derrick at the Dallas arena or a new gym building. Ryan doesn't need to fight Spence and become fodder for the 2012 Olympian. The difference in pedigree between Spence and Ryan is huge.
It was great that Ryan defeated featherweight fighter Devin Haney last weekend, but Spence is the real deal. He is not a fake warrior carefully maneuvered to achieve the things he has achieved in his career.
