There are few things more satisfying than Everything Anywhere All At Once award season performance. Because she was nominated along with Quan and Stephanie Hsu who played their daughter, and Whale actress Hong Chau, this year there are more Asian actors nominated than any before it.
If the film itself wins Best Picture, it will be part of a very small club of sci-fi — or science fiction — films to take home the trophy.
Oscars and science fiction have a strange history. In recent years, sci-fi movies like Shape of water And Gravitation won the victory. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King It’s been in the fantasy genre since 2003. But never before has a film about a woman (Yeoh) going through multiple versions of her life trying to save the multiverse won the top prize. —or even be considered for this award.
Daniels’ movie is so weird — with its sausage fingers and all the bagel philosophy — that there’s clearly never been a movie like it. Let alone an incredible 11 Oscar nominees (seriously, those are James Cameron numbers). Much of the credit for this goes to Daniels and their stars. Although its composition is eccentric, Everything It’s a brilliant piece of filmmaking, a poignant tale of family and survival in America. But the level of attention it receives from the Academy and elsewhere signals a new understanding of what science fiction is and could be.
Of course, science fiction has been a part of cinema ever since. urban in 1927. Over the next several decades, the super genre—Star Wars, matrix—often honored for technical achievements, if not more. Fans have known this for years. Now, others are catching up.
Of course, it is possible that none of these will succeed. Avatar, for example, has been nominated for nine Academy Awards — including a Best Director nomination for James Cameron — but won only in the cinematography, VFX, and art direction categories. (Coincidentally, Everything Anywhere All At Once against Avatarsequel of, water path, for Best Picture.) But if it wins and wins big, it signals an important shift. Eventually, the world will return to the correct timeline.
