Evil Dead: The Game Review

As far as movies go, The Evil Dead series has a much better track record than any rights get, low budget and all – and Dead Demon: Game now find myself in the same boat. While it’s chock full of stuff that annoys me, such as a slight tilt to my little survivor’s inability to scale, slick command prompts, and more, it works just as well. brilliant at being an engaging, balanced battle of wits and reflexes that caught my eye after more than 20 hours – and that’s no small task. Aside from clumsiness, playing a survivor makes for a full-on thriller working with a team to overcome an overarching evil threat, while playing a menacing demon is a journey. Hilarious erroneous process completes the villain’s mastermind fantasy.

Well, Evil Dead: The Game is an asymmetrical multiplayer game that follows the same vein of games as Dead by daylight and Friday the 13th, but here it’s presented with a goofy, suffocating flair by Bruce Campbell that’s a bit weird and confusing like cult classics. Mechanically, there’s not a lot of originality to it: each match, four playable survivors work as a team to avoid being chased by ghosts long enough to perform a ritual that banishes all evil from the land, while at the same time enduring the horrors that are actually the shape of the map. At the same time, a villain does whatever it takes to kill survivors using an army of immortals and a bunch of despicable tricks for cruel satisfaction, it’s hard to feel bad for the spirits. Poor soul does not resist your terrible power. That cat and mouse game is an absolute blast no matter which side you’re on, even if its raw edges make me scream louder than any fear.

16 things you (maybe) didn’t know about the death of a villain

It differs slightly from its peers in that humans are capable of defending themselves. Playing as a survivor feels like a familiar, squad-based, third-person shooter that borrows heavily from battle royale style in which you are running around as a team looking for loot and killing enemies as you gradually increase in power. Only here, your goal is not just to survive, but to complete objectives such as finding map shards and defense areas in order to claim the relics needed during the purification ritual. With so many melee and ranged weapons to find and 13 characters to choose from, each with unique abilities and skill trees that need to be leveled up, its progression system intrigued me early on. with all the different ways that things can be played. For example, the characters in the Hunter class excel at wielding ranged weapons and have abilities that make them a major thorn in the side of demon players, as a particularly great character can banish demons from the body they possess. Alternatively, you might want to impersonate a Leader class character like the hilarious Lord Arthur, an old-timer knight who swings a sword and can power up the team with effects that make them more deadly in battle. war.

The progression system soon captivated me with all the different ways things could turn out.

The worst thing about playing as a survivor, however, is that you’re prone to some of the Evil Dead’s signature clumsy actions as you move around the map. There are no jump buttons to be found, and the environment is often uneven, meaning you’ll always find yourself stuck on a small rock or other small obstacle – even in the worst possible times, such as when a demon is trying to tear your face off. Sometimes a reminder will allow you to climb over small obstacles, but more often you will have to walk around even something as trivial as a low fence. Meanwhile, the demon can fly through all of that, making glitches asymmetrical like the game design.

In addition to being locked in a mortal battle with small pebbles, you’ll also struggle with the lack of a locking system when battling hordes of undead, slick interactions that will prompt you to do things like light a campfire or revive fallen teammates that often don’t register during critical moments, your character freezes in place for a few seconds for no predictable reason, and more. Probably my biggest pet though, is the really obnoxious safe zone system that restricts your squad to an increasingly limited area as the game progresses. If you’ve played the battle royale game before you’re familiar with the concept, but Evil Dead implements it in the worst possible way by making the safe zone changes unpredictable, almost lethal immediately if you are caught out of bounds, and extremely conflicted. I had the whole game in a mess when my team completed an objective, only going to the safe zone to jump over to another part of the map a few seconds later, catching half of the team in the dead zone couldn’t Avoid and put an end to all hope of victory. That is really annoying.

Communicating with survivors with divine powers is a never-ending fun goal.

Fortunately, the experience as one of the three playable demons has less stickiness, mainly because you play as a floating demonic orb that can quickly move around the map and cause damage. mess with survivors with divine power, and it’s a goal that never stops. fun. That’s largely down to how many ways Evil Dead allows you to accomplish that sly goal: you can summon hordes of computer-controlled enemies for survivors to battle, set traps that make enemies spawn and increase their fear upon appearance or even possess undead characters to control them directly, making them even stronger and harder to deal with.

Not only that, by intimidating the human team using traps or demonic abilities, and by separating them from each other, you have the ability to possess survivors for a limited time, transforming them against their own allies, which can be absolutely devastating. Another fun way to win is to simply waste the survivors’ time by doing things like owning the car they’re driving and driving it off the cliff so they have to spend their precious time. to walk around or by possessing a tree and capturing humans. in the face as they tried to rest by the campfire. As you level up and gain demonic abilities that get stronger and stronger until only the most determined and skillful players have any hope of defeating you, and the feeling is exciting. I usually prefer to side with the survivors in this type of game rather than face their united efforts to kill me like a monster, but Evil Dead captured my heart almost immediately. ie – it’s easily the best monster mode I’ve ever seen.

It just feels so exciting as evil.

Of course, once you’ve mastered both survival and demonic modes, you won’t have much left to do but earn XP and level up your character. And while I easily lost myself in over 25 hours of matches, the pack actually feels a bit light on content in some respects, especially where the map is concerned. There were only two, and although both were pretty big and each had a few interesting areas, after a dozen games I started to see a lot of the same locations over and over again, and that increasingly detracts from the novelty of Evil Dead. I play longer. I mean, you can only hang out at a derelict doll factory so many times before you start to feel as if you’ve seen all that a derelict doll factory has to offer and wish for. that you can visit some other kind of failed business, you know?

Evil Dead: The Game also offers several single-player missions, which are required to unlock some of the best characters, including Pablo from Ash vs. The Evil Dead or the legendary King Arthur himself, but unfortunately these missions are definitely the worst part of the pack. While they try to act as palette cleaners for a multiplayer-centric experience, they end up becoming tedious log lines through the same map areas found in multiplayer, where you complete several fetch quests, battle a few enemies, and get snippets of the story via pop-up static images to interrupt your playtime. Not only are they completely tedious, but they also have no checkpoints – so you could die and lose 20 minutes of progress and have to do it all over again.

And because you’re playing alone as a survivor in a mode that feels like it’s solved, the hitting problems are amplified exponentially, including the zone feature. the aforementioned horribly safe, ruined multiple runs by safely roaming to different parts of the map without warning and instantly killed me. They even had the guts to try out the stealth mechanic in one of the missions, which went as well as you’d expect, and made me wonder if the unlockable characters were worth the pain. The good news is that there are only five quests and once you complete them you’ll never have to do them again, but getting through them all is a pretty painful experience.
