The Mercedes-AMG One hypercar, powered by a modified Formula One engine, set a new lap record for a road-legal production car at the Nurburgring.
The car owns a turbocharged V6 hybrid engine based on the electric block of the Mercedes F1 2016, had a time of 6 hours 30,705 to surpass the record held by the previous Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR 8 seconds.
The lap was set up by Mercedes GT3 driver Maro Engel on October 28 this year at 5:14pm local time, just before the racetrack closed at 5:15pm. Fall conditions are far from ideal, but the track is getting better with each run and Engel has kept his best to the end.
“It was truly an unforgettable experience,” Engel said. “I didn’t expect that we could set such lap times with these track conditions. “Like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell at their race weekend, I also had to deploy the electric power of the hybrid drive in the best possible way. It’s not easy, especially with this race length. Beyond that. out, the DRS function has to be used optimally. But it’s also a real Formula One feel.”
Nurburgring lap records are often considered the ultimate test of performance cars on the road because they focus on a car’s handling rather than Trump-style numbers, such as: maximum speed or 0-60 times.
The Mercedes-AMG One, which produces more than 1,000 horsepower, shares the same specifications as 275 production models that have been sold to customers for more than $2.7 million. It also has road-specific Michelin tires like the ones that will appear on the final production car.
The lap is 30 seconds faster than the Formula One lap record set by Ferrari driver Clay Regazzoni in 1975, although all F1 times in the stage are set on a different layout. more than two kilometers.
Mercedes’ new car production lap record raises the question of whether Aston Martin will attempt to establish an official Nurburgring time in the Adrian Newey-designed Valkyrie. In theory, the Valkyrie’s advanced underfloor aerodynamics should mean it’s even faster than the Mercedes-AMG One, but it hasn’t set a date yet.
