Contrary to the trend of the past few years, Dallas trades drafts instead of selling pieces to buy young talent. They were able to achieve Teaira McCowan from Indiana Fever to add to their frontline rotation. She is one of the top recovery players of the league. However, there are still some opportunities for McCowan to improve his defense and expand his firing range.
By choosing Veronica Burton with the 7th overall pick, Wings addressed their need for a two-way guardian, playstyle. Burton excelled in late-field defense during her four seasons at Northwestern, winning Defensive Player of the Year three times in the Big Ten and leading the nation with 4.03 steals per game in previous season.
Burton’s kit fills two main needs for Wings from last season, so there’s a good chance she could become a regular in 2022. Johnson doesn’t usually give rookies much game time, but Burton fills two main needs from last year.
Key stats
Dallas ranked seventh in defensive points last season, with 81.7 points per game. On defense, Wings improved slightly from 2020 in multiple categories including forced first leg, opponent’s PPG in paint, and defensive recovery rate. The Wings are one of only four teams in 2021 with an effective goal-scoring rate of 50% or higher.
Top fantasy options
Arike OgunbowaleG (30.9 Expected FP/G): Ogunbowale made the All-Star roster last season and was named the Most Valuable Player in that game. In each of her first three seasons in the league, she led Dallas in points and assists. As the difference-maker for the Wings in the last few games, Ogunbowale is fourth on WNBA clutch points with 46 points with 13-39 goals taken and 8-17 from outside the arc. Last season, she became the third fastest player to reach 1,500 points in league history. Even though the Wings have one of the deepest spins in the league, the Ogunbowale will still be their focal point.
Teaira McCowanC (26.6 FP/G): Last season, McCowan averaged 11.3 PPG, 9.6 RPG, and 1.6 BPG at 26.5 MPG, all career highs. She is expected to start at center for Wings this season will change Isabelle Harrison in the role of the bench. McCowan gets a chance to play the key minutes as Alarie won’t be on the squad all year.
Satou SaballyF (24.9 FP/G): In the second half of last season, Sabally missed nine games due to an Achilles injury, but was productive once she was on the field. In 25 MPG, she averaged 12 PPG and 6 RPG. Sabally is a multi-talented striker who is capable of gathering stats at both ends of the pitch. Not beyond her expectations.
Allisha GreyG (23.4 FP/G): Gray Lobster is a valuable part of Wings’ deep rotation, but will unfortunately play a secondary role behind these players. In her 5-year career, she averaged 11.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 1.3 SPG. Gray is an effective goalscorer for the Wings and a valuable contributor to the imagination.

Marina MabreyG (20.8 FP/G): Mabrey had a breakout year, averaging 13+ PPG, 3.0 RPG, and 2.0 APG compared to 10.6, 2.7, and 2.4 in 2020. Her ability to shoot from out of the arc makes her an option. Choose a possible attack for Wings. Last season, Mabrey had 3 games with 5 or 3 points or more. In terms of Wings’ abundant talent, she has a high ceiling, but also a low floor.
