Farmers mark 1 year of protests at Delhi Border Week after Prime Minister’s escalation
New Delhi:
Protests are expected to be held at the Delhi border on Friday to mark one year of farmer demonstrations against the Center’s agricultural law.
Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that three controversial agricultural laws would be pushed back. Farmers’ unions welcomed the move but said they would not end the protest until the law is formally repealed and other requirements are met.
With the protest showing no signs of backing down, even after the Center announced that the three laws would be repealed, farmers will hold a number of events and demonstrations across the country on Friday.
To mark one year of protests, a large gathering will be held on Friday at the Delhi border.
Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of various farm alliances leading the ongoing stir, said on Thursday that thousands of farmers are coming to Delhi to mark a year of protests. .
“Farmers and workers are responding in great numbers. Thousands of farmers have started arriving at various morchas in Delhi,” a statement by SKM said.
Farmers will block the highway in Karnataka. In Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, unions have announced that they will join farmers in protests held at district headquarters.
Tractor demonstrations will be carried out in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal.
The protest started from the “Dilli Chalo” show on November 26 of last year. Since then, thousands of farmers have gathered at the borders of the capital New Delhi, one of the biggest challenges for Prime Minister Modi since he came to power in 2014. The rollback of the laws comes just before important elections in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
