Fastest Army Mule Filly at OBS: ‘She’s Always Flying’
A first piece of a 1st place winner Mule’s Army (hip 437) compressed a quarter of a mile into : 20 2/5–Fastest of the week so far – during the third session of the Ocala Breeding Company 2-Year-Old Teen Sales in June in Central Florida. Contracted by Larry Mejias’ Properly Named Fast Horses, the gray pony was not on the underrated Super Holiday program and was in the family of the ranked winner. Double Honor type.
“I’m really happy with that job,” Mejias said. “That bastard worked really fast on the farm. She’s not too big, she’s medium-sized, but she’s always flying. I am very satisfied with the job”.
The Florida hybrid dog, purchased for $19,000 during last year’s OBS October sale, was included in the OBS Spring sale where she works : 9 4/5, but fall short when galloping, according to Mejias. Her RNA for $95,000 in April.
“I entered her [in April] because she’s fast, but you need a good gallop,” said Mejias. “There’s a difference if you work in: 10 apartments and you gallop at: 34 and change, people don’t like that.”
During Wednesday’s gallop, Mejias said “She did a good job–: 20 2/5 and then: 31 3/5 and: 44 4/5. I think it was the best gallop of the day. ”
Mejias continued, “I want to train the best horses I can. Some people like: 10 flat, some people like: 9 4/5, but in my opinion some horses work at: 10 2/5 and gallop great and that’s different with when you work at: 10 and gallop- out is not good. There’s a difference when you join an OBS sale and you can do what people like best, :10 flat or :9 4/5, but some horses work in: 10 2/ 5 and gallop well. There is a difference from when you train a horse for racing and when you train for tinsel. For pinhooking, they have to go fast, but you also have to train the horse to race. That’s my opinion.”
Mejias’s Barn 15 at OBS is directly across from Keiber Rengifo’s grandson’s shipment of Golden Rock Thoroughbreds.
“I started my Fast Horses shipment last year,” says Mejias. “I sold with my nephew Keiber’s Golden Rock. I sold all my horses to him. But Keiber had too many horses, so I started my own shipment and I’ve been doing great so far. Last year, I had 10 or 11 horses for myself and I sold them all.”
Also on Wednesday’s session of the lackluster show, a performance by Flatter (hip 560) becomes the first person of the week to have shade: 10 seconds when she works in : 9 4/5 for Julie Davies. The gray 2-year-old got out of the underrated Evil Riding competition (Candy Ride {Arg}), half-sister to the 1st place winner Wickedly Perfect (Congratulations).
Davies bought it for $95,000 during last September’s sale at Keeneland.
The underground show runs through Saturday with shows starting at 7:30 a.m. daily. The June sale will be held from Tuesday to Thursday next week. Bidding starts every day at 10am
