Finland’s Neste expands recycling efforts with tire processing trial

In its efforts to promote chemical recycling, Neste has successfully carried out its first processing trial with a challenging new raw material, liquefied waste tires. During processing, Neste produced high-quality raw materials for new plastics and chemicals.

For processing, Neste uses pyrolysis oil derived from discarded car tires from Scandinavian Enviro Systems, a Swedish company developing technologies to recover materials from expired products. use. The goal of Neste's pilot is to evaluate the potential for chemical recycling beyond plastic waste to potentially expand the source of waste that can be processed into high-quality products.

Neste has conducted a successful treatment trial using liquefied waste tires for chemical recycling. In cooperation with Scandinavian Enviro Systems, they produce high-quality raw materials for plastics and new chemicals. The initiative aims to expand the range of recyclable waste streams, addressing the challenge of tires ending up in landfills.

Just like plastic waste that is difficult to recycle, a large amount of tires today are sent to landfills or burned at the end of their life cycle. The composition of tires is a mixture of several materials, making them difficult to recycle using mechanical recycling methods. It is therefore well established to use chemical recycling to help circulate valuable materials – and Scandinavian Enviro Systems has developed pyrolysis technology to extract soot and oil from end-of-life tyres.

“The beauty of chemical recycling is that it can process plastic waste that is difficult to recycle. But it's not limited to that,” explains Andreas Teir, who is in charge of supplying raw materials for Neste's chemical recycling. “With discarded tires now often facing the same fate as plastic waste, we see chemical recycling as a logical addition when looking to change the linear life cycle of tires into cyclic life cycle. Thanks to our supplier Enviro Systems, we were able to demonstrate that with our recent processing.”

Previously, Neste has successfully implemented a number of liquefied waste plastic treatment processes. These activities formed the basis for Neste's decision to invest in large-scale chemical recycling capacity at its facility in Porvoo, Finland. The facilities under construction are expected to be completed by 2025 and have the capacity to process 150,000 tons of liquefied waste plastic per year. They are part of the PULSE project, funded by the European Union through the EU Innovation Fund.
