Fury needs surgery, Usyk fight is likely to be delayed
Via Jack Tien Nam: ‘Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury has revealed he will need right elbow surgery following his 10th round TKO win over Derek Chisora on Saturday night, which could put his unification bout against IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Oleksander Usyk is delayed.
It’s currently unclear whether Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) will be out of the ring, but how long it will take, Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) will need to wait if he wants this fight.
If the delay is too long, Usyk may need to readjust as he has been out of the ring since August.
“Maybe I have to have surgery on my right elbow,” Fury told GAME after the victory over Chisora. “I finished the work on the left, so I have to finish it. It will take about six to eight weeks to heal. We’ll see when we can be ready for this fight.”
Should Fury be punished?
Fury escape cheating boundary against Chisora, 38 (33-13, 24 KOs) with constant hooks and put all his weight on him on Saturday night in their trio at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in London.
Holding is part of boxing, but when it becomes as blatant as Fury did tonight, it will lead to referee warnings, fines, and if necessary, disqualification.
Given how Fury’s holding and leaning has a huge impact on the fight, he should at least be penalized by a point or two. Instead, the referee did nothing about it, allow Fury to play the system game with his boundary fraud.
Additionally, Fury’s trunk is pulled upwards, narrowing his midsection that Chisora can target. In the end, it probably has nothing to do with the outcome of the battle compared to Fury’s excessive squeeze, but when you have a boxer with a hose that goes all the way to the chest, the referee has the job of solving that problem to make it a fair fight.
Chisora was so bad tonight that it wouldn’t matter if the referee stopped Fury from hugging too tightly and pulling his pants up to his navel, but still.
You want a level playing field, especially when you’re a laner going into battle with a 1-3 record in the last four like Chisora.
