Genesis X Convertible concept goes into production – report
The Genesis brand is said to have its first convertible.
auto news Reportedly the Korean luxury brand will introduce a production version of the Genesis X convertible Idea, revealed at last year’s Los Angeles auto show.
American Genesis dealer Peter Lanzavecchia, who is also chairman of the Genesis National Dealer Advisory Council, said Genesis creative director Luc Donckerwolke confirmed the model at an annual dealer meeting.
“When he said that at the dealer meeting — said it in front of a few hundred Genesis dealers — that was a pretty good sign,” Mr. auto news.
“It will be a real flagship for the brand. And while sales may be extremely limited, I think producing that convertible will help put the exclamation point at the end of the sentence that Genesis is a true premium brand.”
Mr. Donckerwolke has previously told the media that he is aggressively pushing for a production vehicle based on the brand’s three X concepts.
It is unclear when the production model will be launched.
X Convertible follows Ideas 2021 and 2022 X Speedium Concepttwo different styles of two-door coupe.
Aside from confirming that it shared the architecture and electric powertrain with the coupes, Genesis did not reveal any specs of the convertible. It also doesn’t give any specs for the coupes.
The brand has previously confirmed that all new models launched from 2025 onwards will be electric-only and that it will stop selling internal combustion-engined vehicles from 2030. Genesis chose to omit the options. hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles and invest directly in battery-electric vehicles.
The X Convertible concept has traditional grand tourer proportions: a long bonnet, a spacious dash-on-axle ratio and a short front overhang.
The Genesis’ Parabolic Line curves from the front fender to the rear, while there are muscular ridges on the wheels to give the car some Coke bottle-like lines.
Notably, the X Convertible concept also has a relatively long trunk for a more majestic appearance. Genesis calls the rear treatment a “concave elliptical ducktail,” whose shape is interrupted by a V-shaped indentation – resembling a light – hinting at the top and wings of the Genesis logo.
Quite unusual, the X Convertible concept features a hardtop with a transparent moon-shaped roof above the front occupants – somewhat reminiscent of the now-defunct Volkswagen Eos setup.
The number of folding metal hardtops has dwindled significantly as automakers stop producing convertibles and a few still switch to soft tops.
Like the X Speedium, the X Convertible features a new version of the Genesis top grille – or rather the grille area – instead of the simulated but closed grille of the concept and production coupes. Electrification G80.
The interior closely resembles the previously revealed coupe concepts, with the wraparound instrument panel – featuring a vertically oriented touchscreen – running into the raised center console for a driver-focused feel.
The Korean luxury brand has never sold a coupe or convertible before.
There was a Genesis Coupe produced between 2008 and 2016, but this happened before Genesis was established as a separate brand within the Hyundai Motor Group.
As far as the first-generation Hyundai Genesis sedan is not sold here, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is not positioned as a luxury sedan like its four-door rival.
Available with a V6 or turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it’s like a rival to the Mitsubishi Eclipses and not the V8. Ford Mustang and chevrolet camaro coupe car.
