Guangzhou: Car plows into pedestrians in China, killing at least 5

At least five people were killed and 13 others injured when a car rammed over pedestrians at an intersection in the south. Chinese people downtown Guangzhou on Wednesday night, state media said.
Videos that went viral on social media and geolocated by CNN showed the vehicle, a black SUV, speeding past pedestrians on two separate intersections at a four-way intersection in a high-end commercial district, bustling city of 19 million people.
Another video, which has gone viral online and cited by state media, shows the driver throwing a handful of cash out of his car after pulling over to the curb.
Local authorities said police had “subdued” the driver, a 22-year-old man from Guangdong province, and further investigation was underway.
The incident happened during rush hour at 17:25, when many scooters, cars and pedestrians can be seen on the street.
Police and paramedics were immediately dispatched, according to local authorities, and confirmed the number of casualties.
A witness cited in a report from the state-run China News Service said the vehicle sped past pedestrians at the junction without stopping afterwards.
Although the incident was reported by China’s official media, it was not among the trending topics on the country’s tightly controlled social media platform Weibo on Thursday morning. .
