Gunnar Henderson and Ryan O’Hearn homer as Orioles lead AL East beat Rays to series win
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) — Gunnar Henderson And Ryan O’Hearn considered the leading AL in the East Baltimore Golden Bird defeat Rays of Tampa . Bay 5-3 on Sunday to win three of four games in the weekend series.
Team Orioles, who started 1/2 games on July 6 behind Tampa Bay, led the Rays by two games after winning their 12th in 15 games.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said: “We just played four really good games against a really good team. “Really proud of all our boys. We did a lot of good in this series. Hopefully we can continue to work.”
Rescuer Mike Baumann (7-0) went two innings in over 2 2/3 innings unsuccessfully and Felix Bautista dropped out of singles in the ninth round against Manuel Margot and Yandy Diaz before making his 28th save when four Baltimore pitchers combined into a triple hitter. Baltimore pitchers walked six and hit two hitters.
Bautista ended it by beating Wander Franco with first and third place.
“For some people who don’t have knockout experience like me, it’s like a knockout,” Henderson said. “Really understand how it feels. It will help us down the road.”
Diaz is home to the Rays, the AL’s worst 4-14 team in July. This is the first time Tampa Bay has lost to the Orioles at home since June 2017.
O’Hearn put Orioles 4-3 on a 331-foot opposite-court homer in the left-court against Colin Poche (7-3) in the sixth inning. He had an RBI single on the ninth inning that scored a tiebreak in the Orioles 6-5 win on Saturday.
Baltimore took a 5-3 lead on Anthony Santander’s RBI single in season seven.
Diaz drew it in third with the Rays’ first shot beating wild Tyler Wells, a two-way runner after taking the lead over Christian Bethancourt in game five. Wells was replaced by Baumann after the next hitter, Franco retired.
Kevin Cash, Rays manager, said: “Ideally this offense is too good to be silent for so long. “Yandy picked us but I like to think we could have some better hitters together to put a little more pressure on the pitchers.”
Finally, Wells allowed three runs, one hit, four walks, two-hitters, and five hits out of four thirds. The right-hander made only 26 walks and hit a hitter in 106 2/3 innings at the start of the game.
“That was the goal of our team, to embrace each other,” Wells said. “That’s a big reason why we’re in first place right now.”
Adley Rutschman scored an RBI double in the first half before Henderson made it 3-0 with his double 446-foot ball in the second half.
The Rays took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning in a pair of walkers and a scorer selected by Brandon Lowe.
