These models are equipped with an idling stop/start feature that turns off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, such as at a traffic light. It is then supposed to restart automatically when the driver releases his foot from the brake. However, there is a chance that the starter assembly, relay and some valves are damaged, which will cause the engine to stop working.
Extended warranty covers parts and labor for 10 years from the vehicle’s original purchase/lease date and has no mileage limit. It is also transferable to the next owner. Any service needed to resolve the issue will take approximately three hours. Owners who have paid for related repairs will be eligible for a refund if they submit copies of their receipts and work orders.
Honda is currently sending notices to affected owners.
CG says:
Increasing fuel economy requirements necessitated the implementation of this engine’s idling stop/start systems. The constant on/off cycles put a lot of stress on the starters, so the problem that can start to arise is a matter of time. While widespread failures don’t seem to be unique to Honda, we’re glad the company is stepping up to give consumers a higher level of confidence.
