How the Artists of ‘Destiny 2’ Gave Life to Its Big, Bad Enemy
Without being too specific, these designs, depending on the application, are intended to convey the abstract ideas, processes or ideology that unite the Shadows. So they are not completely within the Swamp, but instead create a sense of continuity between the Pyramid images as a whole.
The Pyramid Ship on the Moon—introduced in hold the ball extended—characterized by Nightmare. The one on Europa has the Crux of Darkness, a ziggurat, and a veiled statue from a worship perspective; it also gives players Stasis. Memory plays an important role in Rhulk’s ship and the Relic on Mars through the psychic ability Deepsight Resonance, worm displays, and Rhulk’s eclectic museum. Are the ship designs based on a theme or are the Disciples their feature?
It’s a bit of both, really. The ships we’ve seen so far certainly have a unique overarching theme, but the creatures that occupy them definitely influence what you can find. In a way, this shift in visual themes is a way to show that the Shadows themselves are varied, mysterious, and complex. Like a character, it can evolve over time, revealing new details or creating new mysteries. This aspect is what makes it one of my favorite visuals to work with in the Destiny universe.
On Twitter, you mentioned how colorful objects like the game piece in Disciple’s Bog, Mars Ruins, and Europa’s Pyramid ship express playfulness through “Pyramid technology”. However, I found it interesting when the Witness said, “You have no more pieces to place, game over,” with the Traveler at the end. Witch Queen story. Does this fun design also represent the Witness as the spooky mastermind controlling all the shots in this Light versus Shadow game?
The purpose of Pyramid technology is to suggest a culture that has existed long enough for art, technology, and science to converge and become indistinguishable from each other. Hopefully, this direction also strikes a balance between relativity and mystery. For example, many technological works have recognizable elements of puzzles, games, musical instruments and sculptures; however, although their design seems purposeful, the actual functionality is often unknown. As for the relationship of these images to the Witness, I think they speak to the strategic and elegant nature of this creature. All we know is that there’s a plan and the puzzle pieces are being moved into place, but more details on the Witness and its role in the Light and Shadow story will be revealed soon!
The Pyramid Fleet is distinct from the organic, plant-filled space in the Garden of Salvation, where players first “meet” the Dark in the original. Destiny. Even the Leviathan ship grows strange plants after interacting with the Dark forces. What makes the sleek Pyramid structures different from other Shadow-related places?
Darkness is a neutral force of nature that can interact in a variety of ways. What we are seeing with the Pyramids is the result of the Witness’s interaction with this force. It is the physical manifestation of experiencing the Darkness through the lens of the Witness’s history, culture, and ideas. Outside of the Witness’s influence, the Shadow can take on an entirely different form and be used for an entirely different purpose.
