How to Use Wi-Fi Calling on Your iPhone, Android Phone, or Tablet
Some Android devices, like Samsung phone, hide this setting in the Phone app. Here’s how to find it:
- Open Phone app, tap the ellipsis icon at the top right and tap Setting.
- If you see an option for Wi-Fi Callingtouch it and turn it on.
- If you don’t see Wi-Fi Calling option in Settingsearch call or Call account and then click your SIM (your carrier name will be next to it).
- When it’s available, you’ll see Wi-Fi Calling next to your carrier name in the expanded notification shade on your phone.
Can’t find the option on your Android phone? You need a SIM card in your device for the option to show up. (After inserting a card, you may need to restart your phone.) If you already have a SIM, open it. Setting and type “Wi-Fi calling” in the search bar at the top. If you still can’t find the option, it’s time to check with your carrier and make sure that Wi-Fi calling is enabled on your account.
What you need to know about Wi-Fi calling
Wi-Fi calls are usually included in your current voice call plan and count as regular calls. If you have a limited number of minutes, Wi-Fi calls will likely count as part of your allowance. They will incur no additional fees, but we recommend double-checking as carriers don’t always treat them that way. If your carrier charges for calls over Wi-Fi, it is time to find a better service provider.
One thing to keep in mind is that any long distance or international charges you may incur for voice calls also likely apply to Wi-Fi calls. And Wi-Fi calling is not supported in all countries. Instead, try using the call function (voice or video) in internet protocol messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Google Duo, Telegram, Signal, WeChat, and FaceTime. You will not be charged a fee.
Carriers dictate exactly when your phone should go into Wi-Fi calling mode, but this is not very consistent. If you find that your signal is just strong enough that Wi-Fi calls won’t start but not good enough to make clear calls, you can force that signal by turning on Airplane Mode then. turn Wi-Fi back on. Just remember to turn Airplane Mode off again after the call.
