Hyundai is entering the vehicle registration game with the announcement of the new Evolve+ EV service. At launch, the service was quite limited in scope. The Kona Electric and Ioniq 5 are subscriber-only vehicles. Kona starts at $699 per month, while Ioniq costs $899 per month. Hyundai says Evolve+ is better than vehicle subscriptions offered by other manufacturers because subscribers can cancel at any time during the service and there are no commitments beyond monthly payments.
That monthly price is intended to be all-inclusive, so it also includes subscription, insurance, roadside assistance, and maintenance costs. Hyundai is launching the program in an attempt to appeal to an audience it describes as “EV curious people”. The manufacturer hopes that by offering what they feel is a lower barrier to entry for potential electric vehicle shoppers, they will be able to increase the level of adoption and awareness of electric vehicles.
Each monthly term is considered 28 days and 1000 miles is allowed. Exceeding that 1000 mile limit results in an additional fee of $20 per 100 miles up to the 1500 mile mark; after that, things get expensive at $1 per mile. Any miles below the limit will be converted if you sign up for the service again.
There is an app for that
Just like everything else these days, there’s an app for this service. Subscribers can enter the app, find a vehicle and pay online. No need for pesky human interaction until you pick up and drop off your car at your local dealer. To be eligible for Evolve+, drivers must be at least 25 years old, have at least three years of clean driving, and have a credit score of 650 or higher.
We’re pretty big fans of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 around here. You can actually remember that we named it ours Electric Car of the Year for 2022. Hyundai used the $47,125 Ioniq 5 as a cost comparison example, estimating a monthly purchase payment of $850 based on a six-year financing for a customer with solid credit. Monthly payments on a three-year lease come to nearly $600, though neither the lease nor the purchase price take into account insurance and maintenance.
