Playing in his First Test, Shreyas Iyer made a huge statement on Day 1 of India’s ongoing first Test match against New Zealand on Thursday, in Kanpur. Coming in at 5th, Iyer hit 75 of 136 balls and remained unbeaten as India hit 258 goals in four of 84 passes at Stumps. The sophisticated hitter’s action-packed rounds consist of seven innings and two sixths. Speaking on Star Sports TV’s post-match program, Test VVS legend Laxman praised the former Delhi Capitals (DC) captain and called him “an established international cricketer”.
“The bench is very strong compared to Indian cricket. This may be Shreyas Iyer’s first test but he is an established international cricketer (in whiteball),” the former Indian athlete said.
Praising his batting style on Day 1, Laxman pointed out that Iyer’s timing, intent, and shot selection were perfect against the Blackcaps.
“He knows when to attack. When to give in a bit. It’s really good to see that he hasn’t compromised his natural game,” he said.
The 47-year-old went on to praise Iyer’s transition to Test cricket.

“The last first place match he played was almost two years ago. The most difficult challenge for a young player is the transition from red-ball cricket to white-ball cricket. Different temperament, selection. the shot was also challenging. Iyer absorbed the pressure and showed what a strong character he is,” he said.
Day 2 is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. IST, and Iyer will aim to build on his record-breaking run in his Test debut.
