After Monday’s confirmation period, Godolphin’s Native Trails (GB) (Oasis dream {GB}) appeared to be the winner of the 19 dark horses at the G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday. Unbeaten in five career starts, G3 winner Craven S. recently bet with several bookies to give coach Charlie Appleby his first win in the Rowley Mile Classic. Appleby will also be represented by Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who will be ridden by James Doyle.
Native Trail and Coroebus were among the top two picks for Saturday’s feature in addition to the undefeated Group 1 winner Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), is one of three potential representatives of Ballydoyle along with Glounthaune (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}).
Also included among this season’s Classic contenders are Legend of Dubawi (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was just two yards behind the Native Trail when he finished second in the G1 Dewhurst S. Last year “His footwork and gearshift was what made him interesting,” coach Hugo Palmer , who won say 2000 Guineas six years ago with Galileo Gold. “With a rating of 115, he is the second most appreciated 2-year-old in Europe. Galileo Gold at the same stage is rated 110, so he is the best 2 year old player I have trained without a doubt. ”
Tom Marquand was booked to ride the pony.
Of his contest, Palmer added, “Native Trail beat a lot of early winners and the horses took a 50-1 win for the Guineas in Craven. At the same time, I don’t think William Buick had to hit him more than once and he hit them three and a half minutes long and you don’t know what happened there. ”
“I think it’s going to be a pretty big field on Saturday. There are 19 seats left and you don’t stay for free, so you have to stay thinking you’re going to run away.”
“I can’t help thinking that a larger field would get in the way of the Native Trail because there would be some people who wouldn’t stay stopping in front of him. Of course, there will be some people who don’t stay stop in front of us. “
Palmer recently moved from Newmarket to Cheshire to replace Tom Dascombe at the helm at Michael Owen’s Manor House Stables.
Other candidates include Richard Fahey’s Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}), who won two Group 1s last season and made a successful return to the G3 Greenham S. in Newbury on 16 April.
