Insomniac Reveals How Spider-Man 2 Handles Character Switching
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is almost here, and one of the coolest things about this sequel is that it has a story that focuses on both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. As if that wasn’t great enough, Insomniac has confirmed that players will be able to switch between the two Spider-Man at will in the open world and at specific times in the story.
Talking to Eurogamer next Spider-Man 2’s 10-minute game demo in the latest PlayStation Showcase, Spider-Man 2’s creative director, Bryan Intihar, explained how the game handles switching between characters and how it’s possible thanks to the power of the PS5.
Intihar said: “As you’re playing the main story, we control when you switch between Pete and Miles… that’s done in service of the story as we make those transitions. “So as you saw in that game reveal, it’s part of the main story, we’re predefining those parts based on what we want to make the story go.
“We have content designed around Peter, we have content designed around Miles, and we have content that you can play. You’ll be able – in the open world – to switch freely. between them with the simple press of a button.
“Being able to switch quickly in the open world between two characters is really, really cool. Just being able to pick and choose who I want to play for a certain activity… it’s great to have the feature there. [It’s] something that we probably wouldn’t have discovered before.”
Spider-Man 2 game director Ryan Smith later addressed the fact that there will not only be skill trees exclusive to both Miles and Peter, but also a shared tree between the two superheroes.
“We wanted to make sure that when you switch between heroes, there’s a sense of familiarity. Both are Spider-Man, you know how to play the game, but you still have that flexibility in customization to elevate. level each character. last name with last name [skill trees]”Smith said.
“We’ve seen in-game reveal where Miles has evolved Venom’s powers, while Peter has Symbiote’s abilities. And so those, those things are going to change a little bit the way you play and you can also upgrade those in their respective tree.”
