At least 2 people were killed and more than 500 injured when a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Iran on Saturday night local time.
Iran’s state news agency IRNA said the earthquake struck the city of Khoy, West Azerbaijan province, northwest Iran at about 9:44 p.m. local time, citing sources from the Iran Seismological Center in Tehran.
Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported at least 580 people were injured and 70 villages damaged. It said relief operations and damage assessment were underway.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded a magnitude 5.9 earthquake.
“The tremor was so strong that it could be felt in many areas of the West Azerbaijan province, causing concern among the people. It was also felt in several cities, including the provincial capital Tabriz in the neighboring province of East Azerbaijan,” IRNA reported.
