Is it illegal to upgrade my headlights to LED?

If you’ve ever been to your local auto parts store and checked the packaging on the LED headlight ball, you know that many, if not most, have some disclaimer. such as: “NOT APPROVED by ADR – FOR terraforming ONLY”.

That’s a great cover for the company that makes the LED upgrader, because they told you right there that it’s illegal to use those lights on the road.

  • Upgrading to LEDs sounds smart, but could get you in trouble
  • Many LED headlights you can buy are illegal to use on the road

Of course, people buy and use these lights. LED lighting greatly enhances the nighttime driving experience in most cars, especially older cars with dull yellow halogen headlights.

However, the obvious must be repeated. If you drive on a road with LED lights that have not been approved by the ADR (Australian Design Rules), you run the risk of fines and/or error messages.

Generally, it may not be likely that you will be penalized for having LED headlights unless they are bright and could dazzle other road users (possibly a penalty and demerit), or if they are poorly lit or angled so that the lights do not effectively illuminate the road ahead.

Please note, however, that the brands that are making and marketing these upgrades are not doing anything illegal, and neither are the stores that supply and sell them.

The aftermarket lighting brand, Narva, states: “If you’re driving a car on our roads with factory-installed (important later) LED spheres, they will be ADR approved. .

“So why aren’t the aftermarket LED globes and ADR adapters approved? This is something few people think about when buying orb upgrades, but it’s important to know, because if you decide to retrofit your car with an LED orb and drive it on the roads in Australia, you risk of violating relevant laws.

“However, when we say ‘relevant legislation,’ what we mean is that the sector is really unregulated. That’s right: currently (at the time of writing) there are no specific laws governing their use. The reason we state on the packaging of our Surefit and Performance LED globes that they are not ADR approved is because there is no Australian Design Code to approve them. We do this so consumers can make informed choices about their purchases.”

And if you install an LED luminaire into a headlight housing designed for halogens and not LEDs, there is a chance that the reflective design of the original lamp assembly will adversely affect the path of the newly installed LEDs. .

The reflector housing in the halogen headlight bezel is made to direct light from the globe where it needs to go – but the design of the LED can mean it can see the light scattered incorrectly and can cause undue stress on other road users.

IN New South WalesThe state transportation agency’s VSI.64 Rev.1 Vehicle Standard Information from August 2021 states that lamps containing light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are: “common on all vehicles modern conveniences due to their high efficiency” and that “an increasing number of LED spheres are being used to replace traditional filament spheres, both in headlights as well as in other lamps such as turn signals- Nhan”.

“The use of retrofit LED spheres is permitted as long as they are designed to be a direct replacement for the original bulb and maintain the lamp’s compliance with the relevant requirements. Some aftermarket LED spheres can be fitted directly to the original bodywork, but these still need to be evaluated to ensure that they comply with applicable vehicle standards.

“With the exception of vehicle manufacturer-approved replacement parts, before purchasing a commercially available LED lamp or LED globe to replace an installed light, check to ensure that the manufacturer states it on the packaging. that the light/ball is suitable for road use and complies with the relevant ADR requirements.”

And to be technically qualified, LEDs must comply with the same specifications “including ADR 51/00 as those with incandescent filament/balloons, including the intensity, distribution and color of the LEDs.” their light emission”.

Therefore, you can upgrade your lighting if you find an LED luminaire with its own housing, so you don’t fit a set of LED globes into an existing halogen lamp housing. And even then, if the light output is greater than 2000 lumens there are more loops to overcome, such as auto-levelling and the wash/clean system.

What about punishment? Your vehicle may have a fault, the lights will need to be removed, with ADR compliant equipment to OE specifications re-inserted into the vehicle and the vehicle will need to be inspected before you can drive again.

Fines may also apply. In NSW you can be fined $116 for “unlawful use of other lights” or “use/allow the use of on/in vehicle capable/dazzled” lights with a fine of $116 with a minus point.
