Nine crew members still missing after a cargo ship capsized Japanese Nagasaki Prefecture on Wednesday, the Japan Coast Guard told CNN.
The Coast Guard said it received a distress signal from the Hong Kong-flagged Jin Tian on Tuesday evening as it was sailing 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of the Danjo Islands in the East China Sea. with a crew of 22 on board.
The Japan Coast Guard said the crew – 14 Chinese and eight Burmese – were believed to have been transferred to a lifeboat before rough seas affected their rescue operations.
The Japan Coast Guard said 13 crew members were rescued, including five by commercial ships sailing nearby, two by an Air Self-Defense Force helicopter. Japan and 6 people were rescued by the Korean Coast Guard.
The coast guard said the Jin Tian is expected to dock at Incheon, South Korea on Wednesday. It left the Malaysian port of Klang in early December, according to the tracking website SeaTraffic.
