Larson wins pole for Sunday’s Cup race at Phoenix Raceway
AVONDALE, Ariz. — Kyle Larson won pole Saturday for the NASCAR Cup Series’ United Rentals Work United 500 at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday.
Larson’s 130,237 mph lap in his Chevrolet #5 was another positive for Hendrick Motorsports, which finished 1-2-3 in Las Vegas last weekend, led by the win the race William Byron.
Larson won the Cup championship in Phoenix in 2021. Byron made it through the third qualifying round for Sunday’s race in his Chevrolet No. 24.
Larson had the last car hit the track in the final lap of Saturday’s qualifying and passed Denny Hamlin, who will start outside Row 1 in his Toyota No. 11 for Joe Gibbs Racing. Larson also had the fastest car on Friday.
Brad Keselowski will start Wednesday while Christopher Bell into the top five.
“The reviews here are really important,” says Larson. “We won pole in ’21 and that really helped us win the championship race. I think being No. 1 in the pistons means a lot, it’s a pleasure to be there. fast this weekend, fast in training and into qualifying.”
Not all is good news for Hendrick’s team this week. NASCAR officials took the windshields on the hoods of four Hendrick cars – including those from Larson and Byron – on Friday and will bring them to the Research & Development Center in North Carolina for inspection.
Any potential penalties will be announced next week.
