“Latino” Bryan Acosta Stops Benito “Canelito” Sanchez Garcia!
Via Ken Hissner: At the Rebel Entertainment Complex, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Thursday, on Cinco de Mayo Day with a Mexican couple in the Lee Baxter Promotion Main Event featuring “Latino” Bryan Acosta undefeated in an appearance second in a row in Toronto to stop Benito “Canelito” Sanchez Garcia in the tenth and final round for the vacant WBC Continental Americas belt.
In the co-main event, two-time Irish national amateur champion Lee “El Champo” Reeves defeated Sebastian Diaz Maldonado of Mexico to claim the vacant NABF Super Lightweight title in eight rounds.
During the Main Event, “Latino” Bryan Acosta, 17-0 (6), #129, of Hermosillo, Sonora, MEX, stopped Benito “Canelito” Sanchez Garcia, 15-6-2 (13), #129, of Jalisco , MEX, at 1:37 of the tenth and final inning for the vacant WBC Continental Americas belt.
In the first half, at the midfield line, a left hook from Acosta to the chin knocked Garcia out with a near 8. Garcia made it through the round. In the final seconds of the third round, Acosta landed a jolt to the right chin that shook Garcia.
In the fourth and fifth rounds, Garcia allowed Acosta to be the aggressor. In the sixth inning, Acosta landed with his hand just above his chin, rocking Garcia. Acosta then turned to southpaw for the rest of the round. In the seventh round, Acosta returned to the mainstream mid-round continuing to be the aggressor to Garcia.
In the final seconds of the eighth round, both fighters had the best exchange of fights up to that point. In the 9th round, at the last minute, Garcia hit a double left hook into Acosta’s chin. Seconds later, Acosta landed a left hook to the chin.
In the tenth and final inning, Acosta injured Garcia in the opening seconds, sending him into the neutral corner. Referee Mark Simmons, for some reason, broke up with them. Acosta returned mid-round, wounding Garcia again with a barrage of punches. Near the half-time, Acosta rendered Garcia powerless in attack when referee Simmons wisely stopped the game.
In the co-main event, two-time male Irish national champion Lee “El Champo” Reeves, 9-1 (6), #140, of Limerick, IRE, defeated nampaw Sebastian “El Verdugo” Diaz Maldonado, 17-5 – 1 (13), #139, of Aguascalientes, MEX, over eight rounds for the vacant NABF Super Lightweight title.
In the first three innings, Reeves, the taller (5:11″) of the two, used an effective jab in a southern terriers match. In the fourth round, Reeves repeatedly rocked Maldonado with right hooks to the chin. In the sixth inning, Maldonado hit the canvas for the fourth time, all unsuccessfully.
In the seventh inning, Reeves hit Maldonado with his left hand straight to the chin, ending with Maldonado’s shot on the canvas and umpire Dave Dunbar tripping. In the eighth and final round, Maldonado delivered his best punch of the night, a right cross on Reeves’ chin. In the final thirty seconds, Reeves rocked Maldonado with a header left on his chin. Maldonado hit the canvas about eight times in eight rounds from clinches.
All three of these judges and writers gave it a score of 80-72.
Before that, returning after two and a half years Super lightweight Steven Wilcox, 23-3-1 (6), of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, beat Miguel “Conejo” Angel Martinez, 15-5-1 (10), of El Salto , Jalisco, Mexico, through six rounds.
