Via Charles Brun: Former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis hinted that he would beat current WBC champion Tyson Fury if he fought him during the peak of his career.
Luckily for Fury, Lewis (41-2-1, 32 KOs) didn’t fight in the same period as the mauling tactics he used to win skirmishes wouldn’t work for him. .
Fury’s lack of arm speed, power and footwork won’t match a top Lewis. It would be too easy.
Unfortunately, this era of heavyweights is sadly lacking, with flawed boxers like Fury and Joshua’s belt holder struggling physically.
Specifically, Lewis’ inside fight with his powerful top laner eliminates Fury’s tendency to hold and rely on opponents. Fury’s fighting style is a simple style that many ham & eggs use.
Fury has ditched his hand-to-hand combat tactics in his last three fights with Deontay Wilder & Dillian Whyte because those fighters lacked Lennox in the inside game.
“I refuse to answer easy questions! Listen, Tyson Fury is a great champion,” Lennox Lewis told Piers Morgan Uncensored. “He moves well, he punches hard, and now he has a great upper cut and jab.
“All he has to do is clean up the division like I did, then beat the next generation. You cannot put two Kronk Gym fighters against each other. It’s the naughty thing,” Lewis said.
It would have been nice if Fury had continued to compete and at least tried to become the undisputed champion by facing the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs Joshua rematch, but instead he was picked to retire.
Some boxing fans believe Deontay Wilder has thwarted Fury’s ambitions after knocking him down four times and knocking him out in their three fights.
You can’t blame Fury for wanting to retire after Wilder’s punishment. Wilder knocked out Fury in round 12 in their first bout, only to watch the referee count while he passed out on the tarp.
It was unbelievable to watch Fury get scored in a fight that should have stopped at the stop. In their third bout, many fans seemed to assume Fury was long overdue in the fourth round after Wilder knocked him down.
If it was Lennox who took out Fury in those fights, he really finished him off. Do not misunderstand me. Fury is a good basic mauler of heavyweight, but very basic, and one that is beyond size alone.
You can’t put Fury in with the likes of Lewis, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, or Larry Holmes and expect him to beat them. Fury would be too much of a stretch to beat those guys.
If you look at Lewis’ fight against Michael Grant in April 2000 to get an idea of what fate would have been if Fury had fought him during his prime. I hate to say it, but Lewis could have caused Fury’s trouble.
