Happy Thursday, my movie lovers: The long-awaited trailer for Martin Scorsesenext movie, Flower Moon Killer, arrived. Apple has barely stimulated our movie preview demand over the past 24 months, just treating us a slow set of stills. some of us have that one picture of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone sitting uncomfortably at the table, Apple remains the only one that treats us forever, etched into our brains.
But now we can see actual footage from the movie. Better yet, we get to hear it—which means it’s time we dissect the new voice DiCaprio is using this time. If you’re really a connoisseur of good content, you’ll know that DiCaprio has a penchant for dubbing all kinds of on-screen movies. It got to the point where I could barely remember what his natural accent was.
But while DiCaprio is always happy to try different dialects, and I’m always happy to hear him do it, not everyone is on my site.
Please react soon to Flower Moon Killer, where DiCaprio plays a Southerner in the 1920s. The Oklahoma-set biopic stars the Oscar winner as Ernest Burkhart, who gets caught up in a series of serial murders that all but all targeted local members of the Osage tribe. Tightening his connection to mysterious crimes is the fact that his wife, Mollie (Gladstone), is an Osage. The film follows the couple’s involvement in a murder ring, including a gang of local wealthy white men. The cast is a killer—ha ha!—with Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemons, and Brendan Fraser round out the cast of potential good or bad guys.
The trailer is beautiful, full of muted browns amid lush green, men punching each other in the face, and burning houses: All the stuff that gets us excited about a new Scorsee. (His last time, 2019 Irish, which received 10 Oscar nominations.) But my favorite part of the trailer is hearing DiCaprio’s drawl as he reads an off-screen story about Osage. “Oh-sage takes their name from Missourah and Oh-sage Rivers,” he reads, putting inflections on all the wrong syllables for my coastal elite ears. “’Move,’ said the great man. [Pause.] White. [Pause.] Dad.” Then are the lines that the trailer uses as the closing chorus: Can you find?wolf?in this pic-shure?
As a gifted actor, DiCaprio managed to slowly pull out a rather short passage in almost two minutes. This gave me just enough time to be completely obsessed with his portrayal of Burkhart: Slow and steady really won the race, when it came to both reading and posing as a Southerner. I can hear DiCaprio say “Can you find The Wolves? In this pic-shure? on a loop, overwhelmed by his sleepy, melodious tone.
I am not alone in this love. Many reactions to the online trailer were amused by Leo’s “strange little Southern accent” and noted that it wouldn’t be a Leo-Marty relationship without the super stylized voice actors.
But lo, there are some haters among us, questioning the authenticity (or element of enjoyment) in DiCaprio’s Okie voice.
This isn’t the first time his vocal work has been called “grating” or outright.bad”: DiCaprio received mixed reviews for his performance in 2007 Blood Diamondwhen he improperly tried South African/West Indian accent because his Zimbabwean character. His Bostonian voice IN Desert island And The departed also created some contemptBut do you know anyone in Boston who doesn’t sound like a cartoon character?
Perhaps this is Scorsese’s fault for making his actors speak in harsh voices in the first place. Appreciate that he has come a long way from his weird Irish-American accent IN New york gang And whatever he did IN Pilot.
Flower Moon Killer premiered on May 20 at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, before hitting theaters on October 6. It will then stream on Apple TV+.
