Lifestyle after cancer treatment: Tips to follow to avoid cancer recurrence | Health

Even if someone has handled cancer, they must be vigilant in terms of prevention because, in fact, cancer patients are more at risk of infection or recurrence of the same or other types of cancer. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Satish Kumar, Consultant Hematologist and Hematologic Oncologist at Manipal Hospital in Yeshwanthpur, recommended the following tips that one must follow to avoid cancer recurrence –

1. Quit smoking: Smoking after cancer treatment can increase the risk of cancer recurrence and decrease the chance of successful treatment. Tobacco smoke contains more than 70 carcinogens, many of which can damage DNA and contribute to cancer development. In addition, smoking can reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatment. Quitting smoking is one of the best things a person can do for their health after cancer treatment, and it can improve their chances of recovery and reduce the risk of cancer coming back.

2. Stop or limit alcohol consumption: Drinking alcohol can increase the risk of cancer recurrence. According to studies, cancer survivors who drink alcohol more often have a higher risk of death and recurrence. Heavy drinking can weaken the immune system and lead to nutritional deficiencies, which can make cancer treatment more difficult. If you have a history of cancer, it’s best to limit your alcohol intake or avoid it altogether

3. Lose weight, avoid obesity: It has been convincingly shown that being overweight or leading a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of certain malignancies and the likelihood of recurrence after treatment. Maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity and a balanced diet can help reduce the risk of developing cancer.

4. Exercises: Regular exercise helps reduce symptoms of fatigue, reduces stress, and has long-term benefits for overall health. People who exercise regularly have a higher 10-year survival rate than patients who don’t exercise. Regular exercise will prevent the risk of developing diabetes or heart problems in cancer survivors because they have a higher risk of the same disease. At least 3-5 hours of moderate exercise per week or 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 days a week and twice a week is recommended.

5. Diet: Diet has been linked to outcomes in some cancers. Red meat and processed foods should be avoided rather than following a plant-based diet (a diet based on fruits and vegetables), as it contains fiber, minerals and phytochemicals that can fight cancer. In addition, avoiding sugary drinks and alcoholic beverages is important to maintain.
