Lucid Air Sapphire: Wild numbers of three-engine sedan revealed
Lucid Motors revealed its hotly anticipated, three-dimensional engine Air Sapphire.
The three-engine Air Sapphire sedan has three engines – two on the rear axle, one at the front – to deliver more 895kW power and 0-97km/h (60mph) sprint time of under two seconds.
That would make it match the Tesla Model S Plaid (1.98 seconds) and make it at least 0.6 seconds faster than the previous Lucid Air performance flagship.
A quarter mile flies in less than 9 seconds and the Sapphire will reach speeds of more than 320km/h.
All of these claims are… claims at the moment, but Lucid promises to confirm final power output and provide test results using the device to demonstrate the benefits of Sapphire prior to launch.
Lucid says that Sapphire won’t just be a straight line rocket. The rear motor can be controlled independently, so the outboard motor can provide full power while the inner motor brake regeneratively.
That would allow for a level of agility not normally associated with full-size luxury sedans. Supporting the smart engines are stiffer springs, unique dampers, stiffer bushings and revised electronic driving aids, and steel brakes that have been switched to carbon-ceramic components. .
The car uses a 20-inch front wheel and a 21-inch rear wheel with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.
Externally, you’ll be able to distinguish the Sapphire from the smaller variants by its subtle carbon fiber aerodynamics package, along with a blue paint job. At launch, all sapphires will be available in Sapphire Blue to celebrate the launch of the show brand.
The driver and passenger sit in 18-way power-adjustable sport seats, and the infotainment system features a series of Sapphire-specific graphics.
All that performance doesn’t come cheap. US buyers will have to pay US$249,000 (~US$360,000) and production will be limited.
