The driving position is excellent. You sit low and nice, and even tall drivers can slide their seats far enough back. At 6 feet seven, the cabin is cramped for me, but it’s also more livable than most two-seaters.

Most of the materials are lovely. The leather and stitching feels as expensive as it looks, the chubby steering wheel is a quality item, and the center console trim is an interesting material. However, eliminating the feeling of quality are the column body and brittle plastic door handles.

The F-Type is the only Jaguar that still has the older Touch Pro infotainment system available; the rest of the range has moved to the faster, more connected Pivi Pro system.

It’s still usable, but it’s easy to see why Jaguar would move on. The graphics are basic, and it’s not the fastest system, although it does have an extensive feature list and – importantly – wired smartphone mirroring. It also has a good sound system.

The F-Type isn’t much of a high-tech performer for Jaguar, so it’s practically unprofitable when it comes to infotainment technology.

Facing the driver is a fully digital instrument cluster, which can be configured to display two dummy analog dials or a central dial with information compartments on either side. Again, it’s not cutting edge… but it doesn’t limit the car’s appeal either.

You’ll squeeze a surprising amount into the F-Type. There’s a space between the seats, two cup holders, and good door bins in the cabin, and the trunk comes in handy provided you’re not married to carrying a spare wheel.

A set of golf clubs will fit there, along with a few weekend bags and some shopping. It’s easy to load thanks to the hatchback with glass, and makes this a car you can easily drive every day.

If there’s a better-sounding car on sale in 2022, we haven’t found it yet. Even the way it burned was impressive; growl at life and settle into an angry but sleek, smooth idle life.

Even at low speeds, the engine dominates the F-Type experience. Even in quieter mode, the exhaust is always there, letting you know you’re driving something special.

There is a noticeable tone shift at around 3500 rpm; there’s more copper for the sound and it keeps getting louder all the way to the contour. Pick up the car and have lots of bangs, pull the gears at full throttle and it makes all sorts of sexy metallic noises. While it’s quite subtle, there’s also only the slightest hint of a supercharger being included for good measure.

This is Slower F-Type, but you never want more power. It feels properly quick in a straight line, with a lovely low torque drop (thanks to the supercharger) giving way to a definite end-to-end plunge. There’s no turbine-style tsunami across the midrange, just a lovely linear feel from idle to the red line.

Unfortunately, the transmission is a bit confusing. Unlike the flexible dual-clutch transmission now common on cars like the 718 Boxster, the eight-speed torque converter in the Jag isn’t quite as quick when shifting and can sometimes wobble when shifting. gears at lower speeds. Hardly a deal breaker, though.

The idea of ​​a powerful, rear-wheel drive coupe with a short wheelbase might not inspire confidence, but in dry conditions the F-Type feels no shortage of traction. You can lightly pedal it with your heavy right foot the first or second, but the combination of traction control and 295mm wide Pirelli P Zero tires means it usually just swoops in and goes.

Jaguar has given the F-Type a distinctly classic feel when you’re in a hurry. It takes a while to get used to the length of the nose and the feeling of sitting right in front of the rear axle, but once you’ve dialed in, there’s a lot to enjoy.

The steering wheel has plenty of weight, and it feels nice and comes off the center quickly. The nose is eager to turn, and when you get into corners, the balance is classic rear-wheel drive. You can feel the rear gnawing as you increase the throttle; dig deeper into right pedal travel and menu overdrive.

On the bumpy Australian roads, Dynamic suspension is too firm. Thankfully, body control is good enough in Normal mode when you’re in a rush, but still allows the car to breathe through the kinds of nasty bumps in Dynamic Mode.

It’s not the sharp 718 Cayman, but Jaguar’s more brutal (or should it be British?) personality is equally captivating.

However, you don’t have to drive it really fast to have fun. With a big boot and comfortable interior, you can happily travel in an F-Type, as long as you can afford the fuel. Sure, the plastic splitter hidden under the front bumper doesn’t like the steep driveway, but not much else gets in the way.

Jaguar has tuned the adaptive suspension to sag nicely in Normal mode, so urban streets won’t give you a shake, and the rear view camera makes reverse parking a lot easier. for simplicity.
