Lukas Changed the Spinaway Plan

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Hall of Fame Coach D. Wayne Lukas thinks Naughty Gal (Into Mischief) performed so well in GIII Adirondack S. Sunday that her next start should be GI Spinaway S.
Summer Promise (Uncle Mo), runner-up in GIII Schuylerville S. on opening day was pointed to the $300,000 seven-segment Spinaway on September 4, but Lukas said Wednesday that he’s reconsidering that approach.
“I changed gears after I watched Naughty Gal run the day before and win,” he said. “I could run Naughty Gal back to Spinaway and I was thinking maybe I could move Summer Promise to Monmouth and join Sorority.”
The $200,000 one-mile Sorority show will be held on August 21.
Despite a wide ride over the long haul, Holy Cow Stable’s Naughty Gal won 2 1/2 in the Adirondack 6 1/2 match, giving Lukas his first Saratoga rating win since 2017 and 61st.
“I think Naughty Gal will have a better chance to win the Spinaway, a better chance physically to go that extra distance. They’re adding half the long hair,” Lukas said. “I think it’s more appropriate. I always treat them all as if I own them and I have to convince the owners that it is the best thing to do. I’m leaning in that direction.”
Lukas, 86, joins Todd Pletcher for the most wins in Spinaway with six. His most recent win was in 1995 with Golden Attraction (Mr. Pros Inspector). In 1984, his first season at Saratoga, Lukas won Spinaway with a game of Tiltalating (Tilt Up).
“I plugged in Spinaway for Summer Promise and left I think I could go in any direction,” says Lukas. “But after I practiced and watched the two of them last week, I thought I would end up with Naughty Gal in Spinaway. I wouldn’t run them against each other. “
