Have you heard the term flexible metabolism? As a health podcast junkie, I’ve heard this term really get popular over the past few years. Metabolic flexibility refers to your body’s ability to switch its primary fuel source between carbohydrates and fats.
Metabolic flexibility can help you maintain better weight, higher and more stable energy levels, and better blood sugar control, among other benefits.
Lumen is a handheld, mobile device that allows you to monitor your metabolism in real time. With one or two inhalations and exhalations through the device, it can tell you whether your body is currently using fat or carbs for fuel. From there, it can give you customized recommendations to optimize your metabolism.
The goal is metabolic flexibility, so knowing this reading and being able to track it throughout the day, before, after meals and workouts, will allow you to focus on fuel. that your body is using. Lumen uses this measurement to guide you in adjusting your habits to teach your body to switch between the two fuel sources.
What is the science behind it?
Lumen helps you “hack” your metabolism. It does so by measuring your respiratory exchange rate, which is the ratio between the amount of carbon dioxide produced during metabolism and the oxygen used. Lumen has a flow sensor in the device that measures oxygen intake / carbon dioxide emissions as you breathe through the device.
When I was a health coach, feels like a lifetime ago, I have provided metabolic testing as part of my services. It’s a great way to start a customer’s wellness journey, as it provides granular and personalized data. That was 10 years ago, and I can’t believe the power of that information is now available in such an accessible way. My tester costs thousands of dollars, and now it’s less expensive, portable, and can be used every day, instead of every few months.
How to use the Lumen metabolism tracker
One of the things I find most impressive about Lumen is its ease of use. Initial setup is simple: plug in Lumen to charge, which takes about 20 minutes. While charging, download the app to your phone and let it guide you through a simple setup to add your basic information (age, weight, activity level, etc.). Once charged, you’re ready to go!
The app will guide you through a few breathing practices, teaching you to breathe in and out rhythmically. It will keep counting for you and instruct you to inhale, hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale steadily. Normally you would do this twice, then immediately get your rating on a 1-5 scale.
1 indicates you mostly burn fat and 5 indicates you mostly burn carbs. The goal is your score of 1-2 in the morning, which shows that your body has burned off carbohydrates from the previous day and has gone into fat-burning mode.
After receiving your morning measurements, Lumen creates a plan for you for the day that includes macronutrient goals. This is created by taking into account your fat/carb burn and workout plan for the day (it will adjust if you plan on training heavily).
Lumen also offers meal suggestions to match your carbohydrate needs for the day. Their in-app support is amazing and provides answers to any questions you may have (why track macros instead of calories? Should I track all macros or just carbs? Should I track carbs by grams or servings? et cetera)
* What I find really interesting and will continue to monitor before diving deeper is that my ability to switch to fat burning mode easily changes dramatically depending on where I am in my cycle. monthly period. Is this an even thing? I don’t know, but since Lumen also tracks your cycle and makes recommendations based on where you are in it, I noticed this.
Why is Lumen useful?
If you like personalized health data, then Lumen will be very helpful in teaching you more about how your metabolism works and how to improve it. Here are some of the overall advantages I’ve found using it:

- It integrates with Apple Health, Google Fit, and Garmin (I haven’t personally used this feature but I imagine it could be useful for those who do!)

Is Lumen worth it?
That is a personal choice. If you are someone struggling with weight management, someone who loves to learn about how their body can function more optimally, or is just obsessed with personal health data, Lumen could be an option. Great pick for you!
Personally, I find the device appealing and will continue to use it. I’m trying to remember to take measurements more often during the day (especially before and after workouts) so I can better understand how my body works throughout the day and improve my Score its flexibility.
What is Lumen Flex Score?
After 4-8 weeks of data, Lumen gives you flexibility score, showing you how flexible your metabolism is. The measurement is a comprehensive assessment of your metabolism initially based on 4-8 weeks of measurements and other monitored metabolic factors to determine your flexibility.
My first flexibility score was 13 (on a scale of 1-21). While I was disappointed at first, I now find it very enjoyable because I have room for improvement! (After the break, I’m sure there’s some room for improvement…)
While I don’t usually count macros, I’ll try to stick to the carbohydrate recommendations for a few weeks to see how it feels. As someone with a history of insulin resistance, this is the most compelling benefit to me.
