Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits India-Myanmar . border area
A shallow and strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the Myanmar-India border area early Friday morning, the National Seismological Center of India said.
The quake was felt in Chittagong in Bangladesh and as far away as Kolkata, according to eyewitness accounts posted on the Europe-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) website and by users on Twitter.
“Very strong,” one witness posted on EMSC from Chittagong, about 184 kilometers (115 miles) west of the quake’s epicenter.
The EMSC has pegged temblor’s magnitude at 5.8, after previously giving it 6.0, and said the epicenter was about 126 kilometers southeast of Aizawl.
