Manjri Varde aka ‘Sassy Saasu’ about second chances in life: ‘Baal safed ho gaye ho, par dil functionsaan hi hai’
While some people prefer to stick to specific life milestones – like getting a degree, getting a steady job, getting married and starting a family, etc – there are others who value life.
This spontaneity often leads to them discovering their life passions, talents, and strengths. Among them is the artist Manjri Varde.
On Instagram, Varde is known by the nickname ‘Sassy Saasu’, and she often appears with her daughter-in-law Sameera Reddy in funny reels and cooking videos. Known for her wit, sassy and always smiling face, the 67-year-old even has her own followers who regularly appreciate her skills. She is also praised for her rather different fashion sense.
But, not many people know that Varde had to smash many prejudices and overcome too many challenges in life to get to this point. Her story was shared by Bombay’s Man on Instagram recently. In a video, the artist and her grandmother shared that she had returned to the world of painting after separating from her husband.
Varde added that selling paintings gives her financial freedom and she can also take care of her children. She also said that she does not pity herself, instead is learning new things, becoming an artist, a content creator and also a model.
In the caption accompanying the video, she shared that she was 35 years old when her painting was first shown at an exhibition. “I was very nervous but even then, I felt happy. You see, that has never happened before. I got married right after graduating from college. We were deeply in love and just a year later we even had a baby boy! And by the age of 27, I was a mother of 2! But soon we started having problems; I felt suffocated and so we broke up.”
Varde shares that she is a “scrap”. “My children have to stay with their father; I have no money. But I promised myself – I would become financially independent; and so, I started painting again”.
The artist will bring her artworks to the shops to sell them. However, for the first few months, she didn’t sell anything. However, when she made the first sale, she “felt worthy”. “…Through word of mouth, I became known. But one of the most noble moments of my life was seeing my paintings in an exhibition. “
Varde said she “was crying that day”. “I have found a new person… a new ‘Manjri’. For the next few years, I immersed myself in work and children. In fact, they are my biggest supporters.” She’s finally settled down enough to raise her children.
“We are our only family and it only gets better after 8 years [ago] My son is married! I fell in love with Sameera from the moment I met her,” Varde said of the actor. “And so when she said, ‘Let’s shoot together,’ I agreed for a moment! I have no knowledge of social networks but I am excited to learn something new,” she shared with Bombay’s Man.
She said after brands contacted them and she even modeled, she realized she had found “a new passion” at the age of 67. “I got a number of comments. like ‘You’re too old to do this’ but at the same time, I have young girls coming up to me and saying, ‘You’re so pretty! I love your stuff!’”
“It has been more than 30 years since I started my life again. I have no complaints – I’m the happiest person I’ve ever been,” Varde said, adding: “But there’s still a lot of things that I still want to do, kyuki baal safed ho gaye ho par dil functionsaan hi hai! “
