Volkswagen is bringing back the high-performance R version of the Golf compact hatchback in a redesigned form for 2022, with more power and race-inspired features. The Golf R has been on hiatus since the 2019 model year. Volkswagen has stopped offering regular Golf models in the US, leaving only the sporty R and GTI versions available here. Golf GTI is mentioned in a separate review.

The Golf R is only sold in a well-equipped version, with the only important choice being a manual or automatic transmission. The only engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 315 hp – 27 hp more than the previous Golf R’s engine. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. As before, all Rs have all-wheel drive. For 2022, the drive-mode system includes AWD-adjusted “drift mode” and stability control settings to activate rear-wheel drive dynamics.

In the grand Volkswagen tradition, the Golf R leans a bit more at difficult angles than some drivers might expect, but motion is consistent and predictable, and doesn’t interfere with driving. aggressive. Like the Golf before it, outbound visibility is excellent at all angles, a reassuring condition when accelerating on ramps and when merging. We estimate the final price of our test car to be under $40,000. We’re torn between thinking the Golf R is a hot hatchback, or a high-tech killer of the Ford Mustang.
