Maps: Earthquakes Shake Eastern Taiwan
According to the US Geological Survey, two strong earthquakes shook Taiwan's east coast early Tuesday morning local time, one offshore with a magnitude of 6.1 and another minutes later at a magnitude of 6.0 near Hualien City.
The earthquake occurred near the area, killing at least 9 people and injuring hundreds. a larger earthquake in the first day of this month.
When seismologists review available data, they can revise the earthquake's reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake could also prompt USGS scientists to update shaking severity maps.
Aftershocks in the area
An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake followed by a larger earthquake in the same area. Aftershocks are usually small adjustments along the strike-slip fault at the time of the first earthquake.
Aftershocks can occur days, weeks or even years after the initial earthquake. These events can be of equal or greater magnitude than the initial earthquake, and they can continue to affect already damaged sites.
