Max Verstappen will run number one in cars as champion in 2022
Max Verstappen has confirmed that he will run number one in his car in 2022 as Formula One world champion.
There hasn’t been a number one car on the F1 grid since Sebastian Vettel in 2014, when the Red Bull driver was a four-time defending world champion.
Since then, Lewis Hamilton has chosen to keep the number 44 shirt number during his career, while Nico Rosberg retired after winning the championship in 2016, meaning he has no chance of running it next season. .
Verstappen, who normally races with the number 33, wants to move on to 2022.
“Yes, I will run it,” Verstappen said of the subject. “How many times can you do that? I don’t know, maybe it’s the only time in my life.”
“I think that’s the best number out there. I’ll definitely put it on the car.”
Verstappen’s championship was confirmed on Sunday night after the FIA dismissed objections about how the final laps of the race were played. Late safety car timing helped Verstappen find new tires, with the FIA’s controversial call for overturned cars to effectively self-inflate for Verstappen to move directly behind Hamilton to restart.
As that restart played out, Verstappen caught and overtook Hamilton and took the lead to win his first championship.
