Because Through various opportunities, Micah Ferguson has advanced in her career in the operating room at IU Health North.
Micah Ferguson has worked at IU Health North since April 2016.
He started out as a certified surgical technician, but he later became a certified surgical assistant first.
“First assistantship is an additional qualification,” he explains. “I can help the surgeon more directly.”
His father was a family medicine doctor at IU Health Methodist Hospital, but Micah knew he wanted to be in the operating room.
“I have always been an anatomist. I’m not everyone’s guy and practice more,” he said. “This uses a lot of that skill set.”
When he first started working at IU Health North, he performed a lot of spine surgeries. Now, he tends to support more head and neck cases.
“You are trained to do everything, but sometimes you find yourself stuck,” he explains.
Over time, he developed close relationships with members of the operating room and surgeon.
For those interested in his role, he recommends following along first.
“If that’s something you’re interested in, there are definitely opportunities,” he said. “IU Health has policies and programs in place to help certified surgical technicians advance.”
